Introduction Python isfinite() Method with Examples

Python isfinite() is a library method of math module, it is used to check whether a given number is a finite number of not, it accepts a number (integer/float, finite, infinite or NaN), and returns True if number neither an infinity nor a NaN (Not A Number), else it returns False.

Python isfinite() is a library method of math module, it is used to check whether a given number is a finite number of not, it accepts a number (integer/float, finite, infinite or NaN), and returns True if number neither an infinity nor a NaN (Not A Number), else it returns False.

Python isfinite()

Syntax

math.isfinite(x)

Parameter(s):

  • x – a number that has to be checked whether it is finite or not.

Return value:

The isfinite() function returns two types of output:

  • True: If the number is finite.

  • False: If the number is not finite.

Examples of Python isfinite() method

Example 1

import math
a = 6
b = 7.54
c = 8+0.54
d = 0*4
e = float("inf")
f = float("NaN")

print(math.isfinite(a))
print(math.isfinite(b))
print(math.isfinite(c))
print(math.isfinite(d))
print(math.isfinite(e))
print(math.isfinite(f))

Output

True
True
True
True
False
False

Example 2

Pass string as an argument in Python isfinite()
If we pass a string as an argument, then we should get an error.

# Importing math library
import math

print(math.isfinite('Nano'))

Output

python3 app.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "app.py", line 4, in <module>
    print(math.isfinite('Nano'))
TypeError: must be real number, not str

If we pass a string as an argument, then we got the TypeError.

Example 3

Pass empty value as an argument
If we pass the empty values as an argument, then let’s see what we will get?

# Importing math library
import math

print(math.isfinite())

Output

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "app.py", line 4, in <module>
    print(math.isfinite())
TypeError: isfinite() takes exactly one argument (0 given)

So, we get: TypeError: isfinite() takes exactly one argument (0 given).

The function requires a minimum one argument, and if we don’t pass that, then we get TypeError.
