AWS Elastic BeanStalk Deployment Modes Introduction

How to Use AWS Elastic Beanstalk to Reduce Risk of Deployment Downtime

You can use AWS Elastic Beanstalk to create and deploy an updated or upgrated application version with blue-green deployment using cloned configs.

In this piece, I’ll be demonstrating how AWS Elastic Beanstalk can simplify deployments by doing all the hard work for you – and with no risk of downtime – by employing a Blue/Green deployment strategy.

Using AWS means combining a large number of tools to complete projects. Personally, I choose to streamline this process by using Elastic Beanstalk, as it enables me and the rest of the dev team to control the AWS resources which power the applications we support and gives us full access to the underlying resources at any time.

How to Create an AWS Continuous Deployment Pipeline

Curious how to set up a continuous deployment pipeline with AWS services? Read this blog and get acquainted with AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodePipeline and Elastic Beanstalk.

Creating a continuous deployment pipeline will bring us a step closer to an automated build, test, deploy strategy. In order to create such a pipeline, we need to have access to several tools. Instead of installing these on on-premise servers, we can make use of the AWS cloud offer. Let’s see how this can be accomplished!

1. Introduction

We want to create an automated pipeline in order to ensure that no manual and error prone steps are required for building, testing and deploying the application. When a failure occurs during one of these steps, we will be automatically notified and can take necessary actions in order to resolve the issue.

What will we be doing in this post?

  • Create a sample Spring Boot application.
  • Push the source code to GitHub.
  • Build the application with AWS CodeBuild.
  • Create an AWS Elastic Beanstalk environment.
  • Create an AWS CodePipeline to glue everything together.

You will need an account at GitHub (which is fairly easy to create) and an account at AWS for this. A step-by-step guide how to create an AWS account can be found in a previous post where we explored AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

The sources which we will be using can be found at GitHub.

How to Deploy a Spring Boot App to AWS Elastic Beanstalk

In this post, we are going to explore how we can deploy a simple Spring Boot application to AWS Elastic Beanstalk. We will explain how to setup an AWS account and provide a step-by-step guide how to deploy to AWS.

1. Introduction

AWS provides numerous services and in the beginning it is difficult to find out where to get started. An easy way to start experimenting with AWS, is to make use of AWS Elastic Beanstalk. Elastic Beanstalk can be seen as an abstraction layer above core AWS services (like Amazon EC2, Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), Auto Scaling, and Elastic Load Balancing). It provisions and operates the infrastructure and manages the application stack for you, in order for you to focus on writing code.

In the next sections, we will show how to setup an AWS account, create a simple Spring Boot application and provide the steps in order to deploy a Spring Boot application to AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

2. Create a Free Tier AWS Account

Before we can deploy or use any of the AWS services, we will need to create an AWS account. Fortunately, we can create a Free Tier account which will allow us to experiment with several AWS services. We click the Create a Free Account button and fill in our email address, a password and an AWS account name.

Next, we fill in our contact information and choose for the Personal account type.

After clicking the Create Account and Continue button, we fill in our credit card details for the identity check and for charging when we use paid services. Do not be afraid, you will not get charged for anything and we will show later on how to set up notifications when a certain budget has been exceeded. This will give you some extra guarantee in order to limit any costs.

We need to verify our phone number and choose to do so by means of a text message.

After clicking the Send SMS button, a verification code is received which needs to be entered.

After clicking the Verify Code button, our identify has been verified successfully.

In the next section, we need to choose a support plan. We choose the Basic Plan because we just want to experiment with AWS services.

AWS Cost Allocation Tags and Cost Reduction

Bob had just arrived in the office for his first day of work as the newly hired chief technical officer when he was called into a conference room by the president, Martha, who immediately introduced him to the head of accounting, Amanda. They exchanged pleasantries, and then Martha got right down to business:

“Bob, we have several teams here developing software applications on Amazon and our bill is very high. We think it’s unnecessarily high, and we’d like you to look into it and bring it under control.”

Martha placed a screenshot of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) billing report on the table and pointed to it.

“This is a problem for us: We don’t know what we’re spending this money on, and we need to see more detail.”

Amanda chimed in, “Bob, look, we have financial dimensions that we use for reporting purposes, and I can provide you with some guidance regarding some information we’d really like to see such that the reports that are ultimately produced mirror these dimensions — if you can do this, it would really help us internally.”

“Bob, we can’t stress how important this is right now. These projects are becoming very expensive for our business,” Martha reiterated.

“How many projects do we have?” Bob inquired.

“We have four projects in total: two in the aviation division and two in the energy division. If it matters, the aviation division has 75 developers and the energy division has 25 developers,” the CEO responded.

Bob understood the problem and responded, “I’ll see what I can do and have some ideas. I might not be able to give you retrospective insight, but going forward, we should be able to get a better idea of what’s going on and start to bring the cost down.”

The meeting ended with Bob heading to find his desk. Cost allocation tags should help us, he thought to himself as he looked for someone who might know where his office is.
