Rancher Labs Discuss the Adoption of Kubernetes "Everywhere"

In a recent podcast, Shannon Williams, co-founder and president at Rancher Labs and Darren Shepherd, co-founder and CTO at Rancher Labs, sat down with InfoQ and discussed the adoption of hybrid cloud across organisations. Additional topics covered included: the evolution of Kubernetes as a key abstraction for portability and cross-cloud security, running thousands of Kubernetes clusters at the edge, and the value of open standards.

The Rancher team opened by stating that organisations of all sizes are adopting hybrid cloud strategies. The use of containers to package and run applications across clouds has seen large adoption over the past five years. Containers and Kubernetes are everywhere: the datacenter, the edge, embedded systems, and other locations.

I think [the term] "hybrid cloud" almost kind of does it short shrift because what we really see now is containers everywhere, Kubernetes everywhere. Kubernetes in the data center, Kubernetes at the edge, Kubernetes in the cloud, Kubernetes in the embedded systems, Kubernetes in devices. I mean, if you can run software on it, we're probably talking to people about how to run Kubernetes and containers on it.

Two enterprise use cases for Kubernetes stand out: providing standardised abstractions and APIs to increase portability across vendors and cloud platforms; and providing a framework and homogenised foundation on which to build and implement (cross cloud) security solutions. Particularly within the context of enterprise platforms, the topic of security has been a driver for the adoption of Kubernetes platforms like Rancher.

Running Kubernetes Everywhere with Rancher

Thomas Di Giacomo, SUSE President of Engineering and Innovation, will be joined by Sheng Liang, CEO and co-founder of Rancher for a discussion and demonstration of Rancher’s Kubernetes Management capabilities. Topics will include micro-services trends, multi-cloud computing options, and practical instructions on how to add and monitor your Kubernetes clusters on Rancher Kubernetes Engine and on Azure Kubernetes Services.

Rancher Labs、Kubernetes "Everywhere"

What is Google Cloud Anthos? Kubernetes everywhere

Google’s Anthos software promises a single, consistent way of managing Kubernetes workloads across on-prem and public cloud environments

What is Google Cloud Anthos? Kubernetes everywhere

Google Cloud launched the Anthos platform in April 2019, promising customers a way to run Kubernetes workloads on-premises, in the Google Cloud, and, crucially, in other major public clouds including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

That crucial last part has taken Google Cloud some time to achieve. The company finally announced Anthos support for AWS in April 2020, while Azure support remains in preview with a select batch of customers for now.

Also on InfoWorld: Kubernetes meets the real world: 3 success stories ]

Speaking at Google Cloud Next in San Francisco in 2019, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the idea behind Anthos is to allow developers to “write once and run anywhere”—a promise to simplify the development, deployment, and operation of applications across hybrid and multiple public clouds by bridging incompatible cloud architectures.

The previously released Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and GKE On-Prem allowed for hybrid Kubernetes deployments, yet customers continued to demand a platform that made it simple to span multiple, rival cloud providers as well.

By providing a single platform for the management of all Kubernetes workloads, Google Cloud Anthos allows customers to focus their skills on a single technology, rather than relying on certified experts in a multitude of proprietary cloud technologies.

Similarly, Anthos provides operational consistency across hybrid and public clouds, with the ability to apply common configurations across infrastructures, as well as custom security policies linked to certain workloads and namespaces, regardless of where those workloads are running.
