Introduction

There are many ways to pursue a career in data science. This article covers six possibilities. Of all the possibilities two things to keep in mind. One, there are more than seven paths. Two, there is no right or wrong way to go about it.

From my frequent and ongoing discussions with other data professionals, I wanted to share a summary of common paths towards data science.

For example, I spent most of my career working in education. In my career, I have worked in the classroom. I taught abroad. Also, I moved into education administration before I finally transitioned into data science. My path isn’t your path. Everyone needs to find their own path.

From my frequent with other data professionals, I wanted to share a summary of common paths towards data science. I hope this article will help others who want to move into the space but are not sure how to get started.

The examples in this article are composites. A composite is an example that draws details from multiple observations. The advantage of using a composite is that they provide realistic examples, but they do not rely on information from any specific person.

Composites are not fiction. Composites blend data from multiple cases and from multiple data sources. To prepare these composites, I also looked to Facebook, LinkedIn, & Twitter. As composites, they represent career paths and strategies that others may also follow on their own journey.

I hope this article will help others who want to move into the space but are not sure how to get started.
