Inline Editing and Validation in Tables

Tables are an essential part of the user interface that helps users to visualizelarge data at once in an organized form. Providing an easy to use experience for a data table is a challenging task when you are dealing with large data.

Tables have several elements including pagination, editing, filtering, sorting, show/hide columns, search, etc. that a UX designer needs to take care of while designing a table. This article describes a few ways of displaying input validation messages when users are performing inline editing of table content.

What is Inline editing?

Inline editing provides a way of editing the table content while remaining within the same page without navigating to any other pop-up, dialog, or page. The users can simply click on a row or cell and edit its text. This helps to change the content instantly without moving away from the current view.

This is a convenient and quick way of editing the table’s content. If you take the user to another view like a pop-up or dialog, they will lose the context of the current view, items, and their details.

How to do inline editing and input validation?

When you are giving the users an option of inline editing the table content, there is a need to provide an approach of input data validation. This input validation approach can easily be related to a form where users enter the input and the validation is being done at the same time along with the input control.

However, since the table is a container that can have large data, finding an appropriate way to display the validation messages can be a challenging design problem. Below are a few ways to display UI messages when the user is entering and editing the text in the table.

How to validate mobile phone number in laravel with example

Data validation and sanitization is a very important thing from security point of view for a web application. We can not rely on user’s input. In this article i will let you know how to validate mobile phone number in laravel with some examples.

if we take some user’s information in our application, so usually we take phone number too. And if validation on the mobile number field is not done, a user can put anything in the mobile number field and without genuine phone number, this data would be useless.

Since we know that mobile number can not be an alpha numeric or any alphabates aand also it should be 10 digit number. So here in this examples we will add 10 digit number validation in laravel application.

We will aalso see the uses of regex in the validation of mobile number. So let’s do it with two different way in two examples.

Example 1:

In this first example we will write phone number validation in HomeController where we will processs user’s data.

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\User;

class HomeController extends Controller
{
    /**
     * Show the application dashboard.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function create()
    {
        return view('createUser');
    }

    /**
     * Show the application dashboard.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $request->validate([
                'name' => 'required',
                'phone' => 'required|digits:10',
                'email' => 'required|email|unique:users'
            ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        $user = User::create($input);

        return back()->with('success', 'User created successfully.');
    }
}

Example 2:

In this second example, we will use regex for user’s mobile phone number validation before storing user data in our database. Here, we will write the validation in Homecontroller like below.

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\User;
use Validator;

class HomeController extends Controller
{
    /**
     * Show the application dashboard.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function create()
    {
        return view('createUser');
    }

    /**
     * Show the application dashboard.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $request->validate([
                'name' => 'required',
                'phone' => 'required|regex:/^([0-9\s\-\+\(\)]*)$/|min:10',
                'email' => 'required|email|unique:users'
            ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        $user = User::create($input);

        return back()->with('success', 'User created successfully.');
    }
}

Data Validation in Excel

Data Validation in Excel

In this tutorial, let’s discuss what data validation is and how it can be implemented in MS-Excel. Let’s start!!!

What Is Data Validation in Excel?

Data Validation is one of the features in MS-Excel which helps in maintaining the consistency of the data in the spreadsheet. It controls the type of data that can enter in the data validated cells.

Data Validation in MS Excel

Now, let’s have a look at how data validation works and how to implement it in the worksheet:

To apply data validation for the cells, then follow the steps.

1: Choose to which all cells the validation of data should work.

2: Click on the DATA tab.

3: Go to the Data Validation option.

4: Choose the drop down option in it and click on the Data Validation.

data validation in Excel

Once you click on the data validation menu from the ribbon, a box appears with the list of data validation criteria, Input message and error message.

Let’s first understand, what is an input message and error message?

Once, the user clicks the cell, the input message appears in a small box near the cell.

If the user violates the condition of that particular cell, then the error message pops up in a box in the spreadsheet.

The advantage of both the messages is that the input and as well as the error message guide the user about how to fill the cells. Both the messages are customizable also.

Let us have a look at how to set it up and how it works with a sample

How to alter tables in production when records are in millions

As a developer, I have experienced changes in app when it is in production and the records have grown up to millions. In this specific case if you want to alter a column using simple migrations that will not work because of the following reasons:

It is not so easy if your production servers are under heavy load and the database tables have 100 million rows. Because such a migration will run for some seconds or even minutes and the database table can be locked for this time period – a no-go on a zero-downtime environment.

In this specific case you can use MySQL’s algorithms: Online DDL operations. That’s how you can do it in Laravel.

First of all create migration. For example I want to modify a column’s name the traditional migration will be:

Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->renameColumn('name', 'first_name');
        });

Run the following command php artisan migrate –pretend this command will not run the migration rather it will print out it’s raw sql:

ALTER TABLE users CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(191) NOT NULL

Copy that raw sql, remove following code:

Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->renameColumn('name', 'first_name');
        });

Replace it with following in migrations up method:

\DB::statement('ALTER TABLE users CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(191) NOT NULL');

Add desired algorithm, in my case query will look like this:

\DB::statement('ALTER TABLE users CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(191) NOT NULL, ALGORITHM=INPLACE, LOCK=NONE;');
