Friday July 31st, Trump announced that he planned to ban TikTok from the United States as soon as August 1st. The president stated he was concerned about the lack of security measures the app had in place, and how Chinese governments could have harvested data over time.

"As far as I’m concerned were banning them from the United States." — Donald Trump, 45th president of the United States

Some speculate that Trump wanted to ban the app as a trend on TikTok went viral, encouraging teens to book seats for his rallies by requesting tickets via his website, and leave the seats empty. Trump's Tulsa rally ended up being at less than half capacity. At the time, he blamed the empty seats on the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests.

Since then, he frequently Tweeted about the flaws of TikTok and why it should be banned, without ever directly saying he would be taking action, until now. TikTok is already making it clear that they do not plan on going anywhere.

On Saturday morning, after Trump announced the plan to ban the app, TikTok pushed out a message to the platform. A minute-long statement from TikToks U.S General Manager, Vanessa Pappas, played upon launching the app. Pappas made it clear that Tiktok "{Wasn't} planning on going anywhere."
