How to implement the filter method in JavaScript from scratch

You probably have heard of JavaScript’s (JS) built-in filter function. If not it’s no problem. In this article I’ll show you how to implement your own filter method from scratch.

Along the way you’ll learn a little bit about prototypical inheritance, functions as first class citizens and the this keyword.

In JS the filter method is applied to an array. It takes a function as a predicate and returns a new array with all the values that passes the predicate.

The filter method is a built-in function in the array object, i.e. you don’t have to create it. It already exists for you to use. However, if you want to extend an existing object with new properties, you can easily do so, as JS is a dynamical language (meaning you can add new properties in run-time) by simply using the dot notation, e.g.

let myObject = {};
console.log(myObject.foo); // undefined
myObject.foo = "a";
console.log(myObject.foo); // a

But let’s say, you don’t want to extend to only a concrete object but to the whole supertype of objects, e.g. an array?

In languages like C++ or Java, you would extend the class. However, in JS there is no class concept, but what we call a prototype. Notice in ES6 the class type was introduced but it’s only an abstraction layer. Underneath you still have prototype . But what is a prototype ?

Every object has a hidden property called prototpye  . property  is itself an object and also has a prototype  property and so on. This is called the “prototype-chain”. The end of the prototype-chain is the null  object. He is the only object that doesn’t have a prototype  property. But what do we do with prototype  property?

What is JavaScript - Stackfindover - Blog

Who invented JavaScript, how it works, as we have given information about Programming language in our previous article ( What is PHP ), but today we will talk about what is JavaScript, why JavaScript is used The Answers to all such questions and much other information about JavaScript, you are going to get here today. Hope this information will work for you.

Who invented JavaScript?

JavaScript language was invented by Brendan Eich in 1995. JavaScript is inspired by Java Programming Language. The first name of JavaScript was Mocha which was named by Marc Andreessen, Marc Andreessen is the founder of Netscape and in the same year Mocha was renamed LiveScript, and later in December 1995, it was renamed JavaScript which is still in trend.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a client-side scripting language used with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). JavaScript is an Interpreted / Oriented language called JS in programming language JavaScript code can be run on any normal web browser. To run the code of JavaScript, we have to enable JavaScript of Web Browser. But some web browsers already have JavaScript enabled.

Today almost all websites are using it as web technology, mind is that there is maximum scope in JavaScript in the coming time, so if you want to become a programmer, then you can be very beneficial to learn JavaScript.

JavaScript Hello World Program

In JavaScript, ‘document.write‘ is used to represent a string on a browser.

<script type="text/javascript">
	document.write("Hello World!");
</script>

How to comment JavaScript code?

  • For single line comment in JavaScript we have to use // (double slashes)
  • For multiple line comments we have to use / * – – * /
<script type="text/javascript">

//single line comment

/* document.write("Hello"); */

</script>

JavaScript Promise: Methods Comparison

Introduction

Promises in JavaScript are used to handle asynchronous operations by keeping track of whether a certain event has happened. If that certain event has taken place, it determines what happens next. Promises return a value which is either a resolved value or a reason why it’s rejected. They can handle multiple asynchronous operations easily and they provide better error handling than callbacks and events.

Callback: A callback is a function that is passed into another function as an argument to be executed later.

Events: Events provide a dynamic interface to a WebPage and are connected to elements in the Document Object Model(DOM), for example: onclick(), onmouseover() etc.

A Promise has four states

Pending: Before the event has happened, the promise is in the pending state.

Settled: Once the event has happened it is then in the settled state.

Fulfilled: Action related to the promise has succeeded.

Rejected: Action related to the promise has failed.

Definitive Guide to Understand Javascript Array reduce()

Javascript array reduce() is an inbuilt method that is used to apply a function to each element in the array to reduce the array to a single value. The reduce() function executes the provided function for each value of an array from left-to-right. The return value of a function is stored in an accumulator.

Understanding Javascript array reduce()

JavaScript array reduce() is one of the pioneer function of functional programming. The reduce() method accepts two parameters, the total and the current value. If you want to add all the values of an array, then use the array reduce() function.

It is similar to both  Javascript map() and  Javascript filter() but, it differs in the callback arguments.

The callback now receives an accumulator (it accumulates all the return values. Its value is the accumulation of a previously returned accumulations), a current value, a current index, and finally, the whole array.
