Introduction Python Tuple index() Method with Examples

Python tuple index() is an inbuilt method that searched for a given element and returns the index of the element present in the array. If the occurrence of the element is more than one in the tuple, it returns the smallest index of the element.

Python tuple index() is an inbuilt method that searched for a given element and returns the index of the element present in the array. If the occurrence of the element is more than one in the tuple, it returns the smallest index of the element.

Python Tuple index()

Syntax

tuple.index(element)

Parameters:

element: element to be searched for the index.

Return Value

Python tuple index() method returns the index/position of the given element. If the element is not present in the tuple, it returns a ValueError.

See some examples of index() method to understand it?s functionality.

Example 1

Let?s first see an example which uses index() method. This method returns first occurrence of the element in the tuple.

# Python tuple index() Method
# Creating a dictionary
val = ('a','b','r','a','k','a','d','h','a')
print(val)
# Calling Method
index = val.index('k')  # Finds index
print("Index of k is: ",index)

Output:

('a', 'b', 'r', 'a', 'k', 'a', 'd', 'h', 'a')
Index of k is:  4

Example 2

If the element not found in the tuple, it throws an error message to the caller.

# Python tuple index() Method
# Creating a dictionary
val = ('a','b','r','a','k','a','d','h','a')
print(val)
# Calling Method
index = val.index('o')  # Finds index
print("Index of k is: ",index)

Output:

ValueError: tuple.index(x): x not in tuple

Example 3

To handle not found exception, we should call this method inside the try block. It reduces the chance of stopping script abnormaly. See an example below.

# Python tuple index() Method
# Creating a dictionary
val = ('a','b','r','a','k','a','d','h','a')
print(val)
searchval = 'o' # Item to be searched
# Calling Method
try:
    index = val.index(searchval)  # Finds index
    if(index>0):
        print("Index of k is: ",index)
except:
    print(searchval,"is not present")

Output:

('a', 'b', 'r', 'a', 'k', 'a', 'd', 'h', 'a')
o is not present

The tuple index() method finds a first occurrence of the specified value. The index() function raises an exception if the value is not found.
