How Much Would Raising Kids Actually Cost You?

In this post we’ll develop an interactive calculator that can be used to estimate a household’s total annual cost of raising children, broken down by expense category (e.g. food, clothing, etc.).

The calculator is based on this USDA report from Lino et al, titled “Expenditures on Children by Families,” which estimates the incremental cost of raising a child through age 17.
It takes into account:
How many children you currently have
How many children you ultimately want
The expected timing of those children
Where your household is located
Your household’s income level
It does not yet consider college expenses, though a future post will attempt to do so.
Note that I’ve transcribed the raw data tables from the USDA report to a google sheet which can be accessed here, in case that’s helpful for anyone.
