Whenever I bring the concept up with friends (including developer friends), they tend not to understand what the benefits of PWAs are or why any users would ever use a PWA over the traditional web browser they know and love (or maybe hate).
My answers to the confusions surrounding PWAs are numerous, but I want to try to use some practical examples to explain why I think PWAs will save the open web even as we see walled gardens raising their walls higher by the day.

Form objects decoupled from your models.
Reform gives you a form object with validations and nested setup of models. It is completely framework-agnostic and doesn't care about your database.
Although reform can be used in any Ruby framework, it comes with Rails support, works with simple_form and other form gems, allows nesting forms to implement has_one and has_many relationships, can compose a form from multiple objects and gives you coercion.
Reform is part of the Trailblazer framework. Full documentation is available on the project site.
Temporary note: Reform 2.2 does not automatically load Rails files anymore (e.g. ActiveModel::Validations
). You need the reform-rails
gem, see Installation.
Forms are defined in separate classes. Often, these classes partially map to a model.

Fields are declared using ::property
. Validations work exactly as you know it from Rails or other frameworks. Note that validations no longer go into the model.
Forms have a ridiculously simple API with only a handful of public methods.
#initialize
always requires a model that the form represents.#validate(params)
updates the form's fields with the input data (only the form, not the model) and then runs all validations. The return value is the boolean result of the validations.#errors
returns validation messages in a classic ActiveModel style.#sync
writes form data back to the model. This will only use setter methods on the model(s).#save
(optional) will call #save
on the model and nested models. Note that this implies a #sync
call.#prepopulate!
(optional) will run pre-population hooks to "fill out" your form before rendering.In addition to the main API, forms expose accessors to the defined properties. This is used for rendering or manual operations.
In your controller or operation you create a form instance and pass in the models you want to work on.

Reform will read property values from the model in setup. In our example, the AlbumForm
will call album.title

Nested forms and collections can be easily rendered with fields_for
, etc. Note that you no longer pass the model to the form builder, but the Reform instance.
Optionally, you might want to use the #prepopulate!
method to pre-populate fields and prepare the form for rendering.
After form submission, you need to validate the input.

The #validate
method first updates the values of the form - the underlying model is still treated as immutuable and remains unchanged. It then runs all validations you provided in the form.
It's the only entry point for updating the form. This is per design, as separating writing and validation doesn't make sense for a form.
This allows rendering the form after validate
with the data that has been submitted. However, don't get confused, the model's values are still the old, original values and are only changed after a #save
or #sync
operation.
After validation, you have two choices: either call #save
and let Reform sort out the rest. Or call #sync
, which will write all the properties back to the model. In a nested form, this works recursively, of course.
It's then up to you what to do with the updated models - they're still unsaved.
The easiest way to save the data is to call #save
on the form.

This will sync the data to the model and then call album.save
.
Sometimes, you need to do saving manually.
Reform allows default values to be provided for properties.

Calling #save
with a block will provide a nested hash of the form's properties and values. This does not call #save
on the models and allows you to implement the saving yourself.
The block parameter is a nested hash of the form input.

You can always access the form's model. This is helpful when you were using populators to set up objects when validating.

Reform provides support for nested objects. Let's say the Album

The implementation details do not really matter here, as long as your album exposes readers and writes like Album#artist

You can also reuse an existing form from elsewhere using :form

Reform will wrap defined nested objects in their own forms. This happens automatically when instantiating the form.

When rendering a nested form you can use the form's readers to access the nested forms.

The block form of #save

The manual saving with block is not encouraged. You should rather check the Disposable docs to find out how to implement your manual tweak with the official API.
Very often, you need to give Reform some information how to create or find nested objects when validate
ing. This directive is called populator and documented here.

Reform works fine with Rails 3.1-5.0. However, inheritance of validations with ActiveModel::Validations
is broken in Rails 3.2 and 4.0.
Since Reform 2.2, you have to add the reform-rails

By explicitly defining the form layout using ::property
there is no more need for protecting from unwanted input. strong_parameter
or attr_accessible
become obsolete. Reform will simply ignore undefined incoming parameters.

HAML-Lint
haml-lint
is a tool to help keep your HAML files clean and readable. In addition to HAML-specific style and lint checks, it integrates with RuboCop to bring its powerful static analysis tools to your HAML documents.
You can run haml-lint
manually from the command line, or integrate it into your SCM hooks.

If you'd rather install haml-lint
using bundler
, don't require
it in your Gemfile

Then you can still use haml-lint
from the command line, but its source code won't be auto-loaded inside your application.
Run haml-lint
from the command line by passing in a directory (or multiple directories) to recursively scan:

will output any problems with your HAML, including the offending filename and line number.

haml-lint
will automatically recognize and load any file with the name .haml-lint.yml
as a configuration file. It loads the configuration based on the directory haml-lint
is being run from, ascending until a configuration file is found. Any configuration loaded is automatically merged with the default configuration (see config/default.yml
).
Here's an example configuration file:

All linters have an enabled
option which can be true
or false
, which controls whether the linter is run, along with linter-specific options. The defaults are defined in config/default.yml
.

The exclude
global configuration option allows you to specify a list of files or glob patterns to exclude from all linters. This is useful for ignoring third-party code that you don't maintain or care to lint. You can specify a single string or a list of strings for this option.
Some static blog generators such as Jekyll include leading frontmatter to the template for their own tracking purposes. haml-lint
allows you to ignore these headers by specifying the skip_frontmatter
option in your .haml-lint.yml

The inherits_from
global configuration option allows you to specify an inheritance chain for a configuration file. It accepts either a scalar value of a single file name or a vector of multiple files to inherit from. The inherited files are resolved in a first in, first out order and with "last one wins" precedence. For example:

- .shared_haml-lint.yml
- .personal_haml-lint.yml
First, the default configuration is loaded. Then the .shared_haml-lint.yml
configuration is loaded, followed by .personal_haml-lint.yml
. Each of these overwrite each other in the event of a collision in configuration value. Once the inheritance chain is resolved, the base configuration is loaded and applies its rules to overwrite any in the intermediate configuration.
Lastly, in order to match your RuboCop configuration style, you can also use the inherit_from
directive, which is an alias for inherits_from
.
haml-lint
is an opinionated tool that helps you enforce a consistent style in your HAML files. As an opinionated tool, we've had to make calls about what we think are the "best" style conventions, even when there are often reasonable arguments for more than one possible style. While all of our choices have a rational basis, we think that the opinions themselves are less important than the fact that haml-lint
provides us with an automated and low-cost means of enforcing consistency.
Add the following to your configuration file:

Keep in mind that by default your linter will be disabled by default. So you will need to enable it in your configuration file to have it run.
One or more individual linters can be disabled locally in a file by adding a directive comment. These comments look like the following:

You can disable all linters for a section with the following:

A directive will disable the given linters for the scope of the block. This scope is inherited by child elements and sibling elements that come after the comment. For example:

The #will-not-show-lint-1
image on line 2 will not raise an AltText
lint because of the directive on line 1. Since that directive is at the top level of the tree, it applies everywhere.
However, on line 4, the directive enables the AltText
linter for the remainder of the #content
element's content. This means that the #will-show-lint-1
image on line 5 will raise an AltText
lint because it is a sibling of the enabling directive that appears later in the #content
element. Likewise, the #will-show-lint-2
image on line 7 will raise an AltText
lint because it is a child of a sibling of the enabling directive.
Lastly, the #will-not-show-lint-2
image on line 8 will not raise an AltText
lint because the enabling directive on line 4 exists in a separate element and is not a sibling of the it.
If there are multiple directives for the same linter in an element, the last directive wins. For example:

There are two conflicting directives for the AltText
linter. The first one enables it, but the second one disables it. Since the disable directive came later, the #will-not-show-lint
element will not raise an AltText
lint.
You can use this functionality to selectively enable directives within a file by first using the haml-lint:disable all
directive to disable all linters in the file, then selectively using haml-lint:enable
to enable linters one at a time.
Adding a new linter into a project that wasn't previously using one can be a daunting task. To help ease the pain of starting to use Haml-Lint, you can generate a configuration file that will exclude all linters from reporting lint in files that currently have lint. This gives you something similar to a to-do list where the violations that you had when you started using Haml-Lint are listed for you to whittle away, but ensuring that any views you create going forward are properly linted.
To use this functionality, call Haml-Lint like:
haml-lint --auto-gen-config
This will generate a .haml-lint_todo.yml
file that contains all existing lint as exclusions. You can then add inherits_from: .haml-lint_todo.yml
to your .haml-lint.yml
configuration file to ensure these exclusions are used whenever you call haml-lint
.
By default, any rules with more than 15 violations will be disabled in the todo-file. You can increase this limit with the auto-gen-exclude-limit
option:

The next few years saw a soaring launch of the now-so-famous websites such as Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Google, and substantially more. In 2004, by the time Facebook was launched, there were more than 50 million websites online.
Then came the era of Google, the ruler of all search engines introducing us to search engine optimization (SEO) and businesses sought their ways to improve their ranks. The world turned more towards mobile web experiences and responsive mobile-friendly web designs became requisite.
Let’s take a deep look at the evolution of illustrious brands to have a profound understanding of web design.

Netflix
From a simple idea of renting DVDs online to a multi-billion-dollar business, saying that Netflix has come a long way is an understatement. A company that has sent shockwaves across Hollywood in the form of content delivery. Abundantly, Netflix (NFLX) is responsible for the rise in streaming services across 190 countries and meaningful changes in the entertainment industry.

The idea of Netflix was born when Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph decided to rent DVDs by mail. In 2013, an eye-tracking test revealed that the users didn’t focus on the details of the movie or show in the existing interface and were perplexed with the flow of information. Hence, the professional web designers simply shifted the text from the right side to the top of the screen. With Daredevil, an audio description feature was also launched for the visually impaired ones.

These years, Netflix came with a plethora of new features for their modern website design such as AutoPay, snippets of trailers, recommendations categorized by genre, percentage based on user experience, upcoming shows, top 10 lists, etc. These web application features yielded better results in visual hierarchy and flow of information across the website.
