How to Identify and Fix Code Bugs in Your Python Code

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to identify and fix logic errors, or bugs, in your Python code. You’ll use the built-in debugging tools in Python’s Integrated Development and Learning Environment to practice locating and resolving bugs in an example function.

Everyone makes mistakes—even seasoned professional developers! Python’s interactive interpreter, IDLE is pretty good at catching mistakes like syntax errors and runtime errors, but there’s a third type of error that you may have already experienced. Logic errors occur when an otherwise valid program doesn’t do what was intended. Logic errors cause unexpected behaviors called bugs. Removing bugs is called debugging.

A debugger is a tool that helps you hunt down bugs and understand why they’re happening. Knowing how to find and fix bugs in your code is a skill that you’ll use for your entire coding career!

In this tutorial, you’ll:

  • Learn how to use IDLE’s Debug Control window
  • Practice debugging on a buggy function
  • Learn alternative methods for debugging your code

Common Anti-Patterns in Python

Improve and streamline your code by learning about these common anti-patterns that will save you time and effort. Examples of good and bad practices included.

1. Not Using with to Open Files

When you open a file without the with statement, you need to remember closing the file via calling close() explicitly when finished with processing it. Even while explicitly closing the resource, there are chances of exceptions before the resource is actually released. This can cause inconsistencies, or lead the file to be corrupted. Opening a file via with implements the context manager protocol that releases the resource when execution is outside of the with block.

2. Using list/dict/set Comprehension Unnecessarily

3. Unnecessary Use of Generators

4. Returning More Than One Object Type in a Function Call

5. Not Using get() to Return Default Values From a Dictionary

Python NULL - How to identify null values in Python?

Let’s understand what does Python null mean and what is the NONE type. In many programming languages, ‘null‘ is used to denote an empty variable, or a pointer that points to nothing. ‘null’ basically equals 0. Whereas in Python, there is no ‘null’ keyword available. Instead, ‘None‘ is used, which is an object, for this purpose.
