The Beginner’s Guide to CSS Shorthand

This short article covers the various bits of CSS shorthand you'll encounter in your day to day work. 

What is CSS shorthand?

CSS shorthand is a group of CSS properties that allow values of multiple properties to be set simultaneously. These values are separated by spaces. For example, the border property is shorthand for the border-width, border-style, and border-color properties. So in CSS, border: 5px solid red; would specify a border that’s five px wide, solid, and red.

In addition to the CSS border property, the margin, padding, background, font, animation, transition, and flex properties all have a shorthand.

Border

border allows you to set border width, style and, color all in one single property. So for example:

border: 1px solid black;

is equivalent to the following three rules:

border-width: 1px;
border-style: solid;
border-color: black;

You can also break these down further into even more specific rules, for a single border of the element it is applied to, like so:

border-left: 1px solid black;
border-right: 1px solid black;
border-top: 1px solid black;
border-bottom: 1px solid black;

or even:

border-left-width: 2px;
border-left-style: solid;
border-left-color: black;

You will very rarely want to go this granular; you will probably use simply border or border-left/-right/-top/-bottom in most cases. The more granular options will likely be used only if you want to override an earlier border declaration.

Margin, padding, outline

Shorthand for margin, padding, and outline all works in the same way. Consider the following margin rule:

div.foo {
  margin-top: 1em;
  margin-right: 1.5em;
  margin-bottom: 2em;
  margin-left: 2.5em;
}

Such a rule could also be written as:

div.foo {
  margin: 1em 1.5em 2em 2.5em;
}

These types of property can take less than four values too, as follows:

  1. Same value applied to all four sides — margin: 2px;
  2. First value applied to the top and bottom, second to the left and right — margin: 2px 5px;.
  3. First and third values applied to the top and bottom respectively, second value applied to the left and right — margin: 2px 5px 1px;.

Font

You can specify the font size, weight, style, family, and line height using one line of shorthand. Consider the following CSS:

font-weight: bold;
font-style: italic;
font-variant: small-caps;
font-size: 1.5em;
line-height: 200%;
font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;

You could specify all of this using the following line:

font: bold italic small-caps 1.5em/200% Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;

Note that it doesn’t really matter about the order of many of these, although you should make sure that font-size/line-height and font-family come in the positions shown above; in addition, font-size and font-family should be specified. If not, this shorthand may not work in some browsers.

Note also that if font-weight, font-style or font-variant are not specified, their values default to normal.

Background

In CSS 2, you can specify background color, background image, image repeat and image position with one line of CSS. Take the following:

background-color: #000;
background-image: url(image.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position: top left;
background-attachment: fixed;

This can all be represented using the following shorthand:

background: #000 url(image.gif) no-repeat top left fixed;

Note that if any of the values are left out, the following defaults are assumed:

background-color: transparent;
background-image: none;
background-repeat: repeat;
background-position: top left;
background-attachment: scroll;

Enhancements in CSS3

CSS3 introduces three new properties: background-size, background-origin, and background-clip. You can include them in the background shorthand like so:

background: #000 url(image.gif); no-repeat top left / 50% 20% border-box content-box;

Notice the slash between top left and 50% 20%; it separates the values for background-position and background-size since these two properties share some value units (lengths and percentage); without it we cannot distinguish which values are for which.

So if you want to include the background-size value in the shorthand syntax, you need to:

  • Explicitly include background-position values even if these are the same as the defaults (see above).
  • Write background-position values before background-size values.
  • Put a slash in between these two pairs of values.

Similarly, background-origin and background-clip share the same keyword as their values. These two also needs to be written in order: background-origin coming in first, and background-clip second.

If you only specify one box value (border-box, padding-box, or content-box), then the value applies to background-origin and background-clip.

Note: CSS3 gradients are a special, advanced value of background-image — aside from the syntactical difference, gradient values appear in exactly the same place in the shorthand as other background-image values, and work in the same way. For more on CSS3 gradients, you can read CSS3 linear gradients and CSS3 radial gradients over at dev.opera.com.

List

You can specify the list bullet type, position, and image on a single line. Take the following CSS:

list-style-type: circle;
list-style-position: inside;
list-style-image: url(bullet.gif);

This is the equivalent of:

list-style: circle inside url(bullet.gif);

Note that if any of the values are left out, the following defaults are assumed:

list-style-type: circle;
list-style-position: outside;
list-style-image: none;

Color

When specifying hexadecimal color values, you can use shorthand if both hex values are the same for each color channel. For example, #000 is equivalent to the longhand #000000. Let’s look at a more complicated example too: #6c9 is the same as #66cc99.

If not given a FILE, "coverage/lcov.info" will be used.
-f, --file=<FILE>                      The target lcov.info file to be reported

Serverless Env Generator Plugin

This is a fork of serverless-env-generator with more advanced YAML anchor supporting. See extended description for Commands and YAML File Structure and see Key features of this fork.

This plugin automatically creates a .env file during deployment by merging environment variables from one or more YAML files. During runtime these variables can then be loaded into process.env using dotenv.

For a brief introduction, read our blogpost about introducing serverless-env-generator.

Key features:

  • Support for multi-stage configurations and custom profiles
  • Value of environment variables can be encrypted with AWS KMS, allowing teams to manage sensitive information in git.
  • By using KMS, access to secrets can be controlled with IAM. We recommend to create one KMS key per serverless-profile, so you can limit access to credentials to deployment privileges.
  • During deployment a temporary .env file is created and uploaded to Lambda by merging and decrypting values of your environment YAML files.
  • Environment variables can be loaded with dotenv at startup in Lambda without delays from KMS.
  • Supports serverless-local-dev-server and serverless offline for local development.

Key features of this fork:

  • Don`t expand merge directives when modifying env file
  • Add new commands that work with anchors
  • Support for serverless v2

Notes

Please note that the uploaded .env file contains secrets in cleartext. Therefore we recommend to use Serverless Crypt for critical secrets. This tool aims to strike a balance between storing secrets in plaintext in Lambda environment variables and having to decrypt them at runtime using KMS.

Furthermore the tool does not support environment variables generated by Serverless. We recommend to set these variables directly in each functions configuration in serverless.yml.

When used with serverless-local-dev-server your environment variables are directly loaded into process.env. No .env file is created to make sure that your local development and deployment tasks do not interfere :-)

This package requires node >= 8.0. Due to the reliance on KMS, encryption is only supported for AWS.

The .env.local file in the project root is here only for the tests.

Requirements

Getting Started

1. Install the plugin and dotenv

npm install dotenv --save
npm install @redtea/serverless-env-generator --save-dev

2. Create a key on KMS

See: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/kms/latest/developerguide/create-keys.html

Please make sure to create the KMS key in the same region as your deployment.

For aliases we recommend to use the service name, for administration privileges no user (your AWS account has full permissions by default) and for usage privileges "serverless-admin" to link access permissions to deployment permissions.

3. Add the plugin to your serverless configuration file

4. Add the .env file to your .gitignore

As the generated .env file contains the secrets in cleartext, make sure that it will never be checked into git!

5. Add variables to your environment YAML file

6. Write your function

Note that the .env file is automatically created when you deploy your function, so you can just load those variables with dotenv 🎉

If no stage is specified the default one as specified in serverless.yml is used.

Viewing environment variables

Use the following commands to read and decrypt variables from your YAML environment files:

serverless env --attribute $NAME --stage $STAGE

Use the following commands to store and encrypt variables in your YAML environment files:

YAML File Structure

Environment variables are stored in stage-agnostic YAML files, which are then merged into a .env file on deployment.

You can create additional YAML environment files, for example to include variables that are dynamically generated. Just add them to the envFiles in your serverless.yml.

Usage with the serverless-plugin-webpack

In case you are also using the serverless-plugin-webpack there are some caveats:

1. Plugin order in `serverless.yml'

You have to place @redtea/serverless-env-generator before the serverless-plugin-webpack in the serverless.yml

2. Additional dotenv-webpack

You need to have the dotenv-webpack plugin installed:

Creating a CSS Visual Cheatsheet

The other day one of our students asked about possibility of having a CSS cheatsheet to help to decide on the best suited approach when doing this or that layout.

This evolved into the idea of making a visual CSS cheatsheet with all (most) of the common patterns we see everyday and one of the best possible conceptual implementation for them.

In the end any layout could and should be split into parts/blocks and we see every block separately.

Here is our first take on that and we would be happy to keep extending it to help us all.

Please, send you suggestions in the comments in community or via gitlab for the repeated CSS patterns with your favourite implementation for that so that we will all together make this as useful as it can be.
