The Technologies We Need to Slow Climate Change

What we know today is that the global climate is increasing, and continues to do so at a rapid rate.

According to NASA, the global temperature has increased by 2°F since 1880, and based on these climate records nineteen of the twenty warmest years have occurred since the year 2001.

Now, you may wonder why a 2°F increase in global temperature is so drastic, but this is what it has resulted in. The Arctic sea ice is currently declining at a rate of 12.85 percent per decade, the Earth’s polar ice sheets continue to lose a mass of 426 gigatonnes per year, and sea-level rise is increasing by 3.3 millimeters per year. These are just a few of the many impacts climate change has taken effect on the Earth.

Human activities have caused the utmost damage and destruction to the Earth. We pollute the air, the water, the land. We consume at a rapid scale, overexploit natural resources, and produce waste that is later found in the oceans and landfills disturbing and destroying ecosystems. The damage we have done is far too great to simply think about ways we can heal the Earth. We must implement the technologies and innovations that have already been created on a global scale. The time to do so is now.

Here are five tech innovations that are vital for mitigating the climate crisis, and the pros and cons of each.

1. Clean and renewable energy

Renewable energy, such as wind and solar, are unlimited. This energy is generated through natural processes and is highly dependent on weather. Wind power has been used for thousands of years and proves to be a vital source in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable energy is constantly replenished by natural resources and with an ever-growing population, we need the technology that will be able to sustain societies without having a harmful impact on the Earth.

On the positive side, in nearly every U.S. state, renewable energy creates 5 times more jobs than the fossil fuel industry. One wind turbine can generate enough electricity to power 1,400 homes.

Renewable energy, such as wind, solar, and tidal, are clean sources of power that does not pollute the air or require any destructive chemicals. Stable energy prices are expected from a bulk of energy from renewable sources. And once in place, renewables are proven to have a lower-cost operation compared to fossil fuel methods.

The downsides are: high development costs are required to implement renewable energy stations in both research and manufacturing components; and large areas of land are required to produce large amounts of energy. Also, renewable energy is somewhat dependent on the efficiency of weather.
