Building an LED Fire Lantern Using a Raspberry Pi

Why? So finally I bought this RGB LED Matrix and I wanted to create something awesome with it.

After it became clear that for our amateur theater we needed a medieval lantern, which was supposed to go out by magic (or WiFi), I had found my project.


What you need

Tech stuff:

For the case:

  • Raspberry Pi case, which you can combine with the RGB Matrix Bonnet.
  • ~ 12 € / $ 14
  • A nice medieval lantern case where your LED Matrix fits in.
  • (in my case HOME & styling collection lantern for ~ 20 € / $ 23)
  • Some white plexiglass to blur the pixels | ~ 10 € / $ 11

In summary this project cost me around 166 € / $ 187, so it was more expensive than I first suspected. 😮

Install RGB Matrix Bonnet and drivers

At first you want to prepare your Raspberry Pi to work with your LED Matrix.

You can test it by running some examples from hzeller/rpi-rgb-led-matrix.

Keep in mind, that you have to run these examples as root, since you are accessing GPIO hardware.

Good to know:_ The Matrix Bonnet provides power to your Raspberry Pi. If you bought a good enough power supply, you can power your lantern with only one cable!_


Install the software

Since your RPI can now control your LED Matrix, we can install all necessary tools and scripts to run the fire.

The fire itself is rendered by a small node application I made for exactly that purpose.

The last commands was the rpi-led-matrix-fire script, which comes with a few command-line options:

In my case I wanted to rotate the fire by 270 degrees, but based on your case you may want it in another orientation.

An important parameter is led-slowdown-gpio.

This parameter is documented in the core library, so based on the model and the speed of your Raspberry Pi, you should select a value between 0 and 4.

How to blink an LED with Raspberry Pi Pico in C

The new Raspberry Pi Pico is very different from a traditional Raspberry Pi. Pico is a microcontroller, rather than a microcomputer. Unlike a Raspberry Pi it’s a platform you develop for, not a platform you develop on.

But you still have choices if you want to develop for Pico, because there is both a C/C++ SDK and an official MicroPython port. Beyond that there are other options opening up, with a port of CircuitPython from Adafruit and the prospect of Arduino support, or even a Rust port.

Here I’m going to talk about how to get started with the C/C++ SDK, which lets you develop for Raspberry Pi Pico from your laptop or Raspberry Pi.

I’m going to assume you’re using a Raspberry Pi; after all, why wouldn’t you want to do that? But if you want to develop for Pico from your Windows or Mac laptop, you’ll find full instructions on how to do that in our Getting Started guide.

Deciphering the impact of IoT on Smart Lighting

Technology is a compelling resource when it comes to minimizing the chances of covid-19 transmission. While the usefulness in the medical realm is evident and would require a separate discussion, the main focus of our current discussion will be IoT-empowered lighting solutions. Most of the manufacturers dealing in lighting solutions are opting for smart accessibility to minimize human contact.

Implementing smart lighting solutions will allow us to access the appliances without having to touch the switchboards. Besides eliminating touch and physical interactions, smart lights can offer a host of other relevant benefits to the early adopters.

Embracing Digitalization

The concept of connected LEDs does instill confidence. However, before we delve any deeper into why and how companies are embracing smart lighting solutions, we need to understand a bit more about the digitalization and the introduction of new services. Post covid19, individual inclinations are expected to change. Instead of opting for massive setups, preferences will be more discretionary in nature, when it comes to using home lighting solutions.
