An Application Programming Interface (API) is a method by which two computers are can communicate with each other. Web APIs are the type of APIs used on the internet. APIsallow developers to separate concerns in software either as functional components or a service-oriented manner.

Django is a Python framework that allows for building web applications in a fast and efficient way. A lot of times, the developer or team who utilizes an API is different from the developer or team who built it.

Hence the need to provide a means of communicating API functionalities in a precise and clear manner to other developers. Django REST framework provides the capability to build RESTful (Representational State Transfer) kind of APIs with the Django framework.

Swagger UI allows us to build our documentation in the form of HTML pages so it can be viewed and read with ease. In this article, we shall go over creating an API for managing student records in a school and document the API we create.

1. Creating our Django Project

Let us start the project we are going to document by creating installing Django and setting up an app. We shall start by creating a directory (folder) for our project and navigate into the new directory. let’s call the directory school-api

mkdir school-api && cd school-api

Let us create a virtual environment with virtualenvto isolate our project from any other project on our computer. We shall name the new virtual environment env.

virtualenv env

We shall activate the virtual environment as follows

source env/bin/activate

Should we need to deactivate the virtual environment, we shall simply use the deactivate command, deactivate.

Now, as we have activated our virtual environment, let’s proceed to install necessary packages and software including the Django package, and the django-rest-framework , the package that allows us to use the Django REST framework.

pip install Django django-rest-framework

now, we shall create our Django project

django-admin startproject schoolService

Let’s change directory into the new project directory

cd schoolService

then, we’d go to to create an app to host our APIs

Now, we will add the rest_framework and api app to the list of INSTALLED_APP in the settings.py file in the project directory, the schoolService folder.

What is REST?

The REST acronym is defined as a “REpresentational State Transfer” and is designed to take advantage of existing HTTP protocols when used for Web APIs. It is very flexible in that it is not tied to resources or methods and has the ability to handle different calls and data formats. Because REST API is not constrained to an XML format like SOAP, it can return multiple other formats depending on what is needed. If a service adheres to this style, it is considered a “RESTful” application. REST allows components to access and manage functions within another application.

REST was initially defined in a dissertation by Roy Fielding’s twenty years ago. He proposed these standards as an alternative to SOAP (The Simple Object Access Protocol is a simple standard for accessing objects and exchanging structured messages within a distributed computing environment). REST (or RESTful) defines the general rules used to regulate the interactions between web apps utilizing the HTTP protocol for CRUD (create, retrieve, update, delete) operations.

What is an API?

An API (or Application Programming Interface) provides a method of interaction between two systems.

What is a RESTful API?

A RESTful API (or application program interface) uses HTTP requests to GET, PUT, POST, and DELETE data following the REST standards. This allows two pieces of software to communicate with each other. In essence, REST API is a set of remote calls using standard methods to return data in a specific format.

The systems that interact in this manner can be very different. Each app may use a unique programming language, operating system, database, etc. So, how do we create a system that can easily communicate and understand other apps?? This is where the Rest API is used as an interaction system.

When using a RESTful API, we should determine in advance what resources we want to expose to the outside world. Typically, the RESTful API service is implemented, keeping the following ideas in mind:

  • Format: There should be no restrictions on the data exchange format
  • Implementation: REST is based entirely on HTTP
  • Service Definition: Because REST is very flexible, API can be modified to ensure the application understands the request/response format.
  • The RESTful API focuses on resources and how efficiently you perform operations with it using HTTP.

The features of the REST API design style state:

  • Each entity must have a unique identifier.
  • Standard methods should be used to read and modify data.
  • It should provide support for different types of resources.
  • The interactions should be stateless.

For REST to fit this model, we must adhere to the following rules:

  • Client-Server Architecture: The interface is separate from the server-side data repository. This affords flexibility and the development of components independently of each other.
  • Detachment: The client connections are not stored on the server between requests.
  • Cacheability: It must be explicitly stated whether the client can store responses.
  • Multi-level: The API should work whether it interacts directly with a server or through an additional layer, like a load balancer.

54% of Developers Cite Lack of Documentation as the Top Obstacle to Consuming APIs

Recently, I worked with my team at Postman to field the 2020 State of the API survey and report. We’re insanely grateful to the folks who participated—more than 13,500 developers and other professionals took the survey, helping make this the largest and most comprehensive survey in the industry. (Seriously folks, thank you!) Curious what we learned? Here are a few insights in areas that you might find interesting:

API Reliability

Whether internal, external, or partner, APIs are perceived as reliable—more than half of respondents stated that APIs do not break, stop working, or materially change specification often enough to matter. Respondents choosing the “not often enough to matter” option here came in at 55.8% for internal APIs, 60.4% for external APIs, and 61.2% for partner APIs.

Obstacles to Producing APIs

When asked about the biggest obstacles to producing APIs, lack of time is by far the leading obstacle, with 52.3% of respondents listing it. Lack of knowledge (36.4%) and people (35.1%) were the next highest.
