I received the Aer travel pack a few months ago after pledging for the Aer Travel Pack on it’s kickstarter campaign. I used it on a trip to Korea, and fell in love with it’s no nonsense organisation and function as a one bag travel. Hence it urged me to write a review of the Aer Travel Pack to share my thoughts and findings. Aer is a company based in San Francisco. The Aer Duffel pack and the Fit pack are two other outstanding products by the company. Seeing the success of prior products, and that users were using their bags as weekenders. The Travel pack was designed with the intent to provide a similar product as the Duffel pack but with better capacity.

Function & Practicality

The bag serves one purpose: free yourself from suitcases. And it does the job. The Aer Travel Pack fares well replacing a suitcase. It also limits and makes you reconsider what to bring and not bring for a short trip. I was able to comfortably fit 4-5 days worth of clothes in this pack. This backpack however, will not function well as a day bag. Despite how it can be cinched down in terms of thickness. The travel pack is too tall and heavy (3.9lbs) to be hauled around everyday. More importantly, for a luggage bag, it stands up straight on the ground whenever you need to unload the bag from your shoulders.

Appearance

Minimal and clean are the words to describe Aer products. It inherits the same design language from its sibling bags. The face of the bag is clean, logo-free and dangle free. One of my friends described it to look like a turtle-shell. Subjectively, I think the travel pack looks better than most “one-bag-travel” bags out there. It doesn’t look over functional. You wouldn’t be embarrassed to take it out on a business trip either. Material

Fabric

Made from a type of ripstock nylon, the backpack offers sturdiness and the ruggedness required to function as a travel bag. I personally love the materials used in the outer and inner surfaces of the bag. However, the thick padding used in the sides of the main compartment does add up on weight. It is a trade off for the durability and structural integrity.

Straps

The shoulder straps are wide, thick and padded. When the bag itself is empty, the straps feel like an overkill. When it is full to the brim though, you would be glad that Aer had taken the extra mile to ensure the load comfortably sitting on your shoulders. The problem with the straps though is that there aren’t any organisation to roll up or tuck the additional straps away. Making it a little clumsy when moving around with the bag.

Zippers

The zippers are of good quality. There are a few things that I do not quite understand though. The travel pack uses zipper pulls and a metal zipper tabs together. I personally find the metal tabs to be redundant and sometimes can be a little noisy. Just the zipper pulls would be sufficient. Another problem that I came across was the that the front pockets had weather proof zippers but the main and laptop compartment did not. I would expect that the laptop compartment warranted a more weather proof finish than the front 2 zippers. Other than that, the zipper teeth were smooth and easy to open and close.

Stitching

By far the best and most consistent stitching I have seen in a backpack. For it’s price range, I believe the stitching to of good quality. This bag will hold in the many years to come. Even filling the bag to the brim and at the verge of bursting, the stitching showed no signs of giving in. Definitely a well-built product.

Comfort

For the most part, the bag is comfortable. It sits high on your back, with adequate weight distribution. There are straps at the top to help pulling the weight of the bag towards you. I found this feature good, but not as helpful as the sternum straps. The back panel is made out of a mesh material. The panel rests on the shoulder blades and a channel for air ventilation is provided. I personally don’t find it that helpful with sweaty backs. Being thick and cushioned, the back panel is good enough for an extended period of carry.

Organization

Compartments

This is where the Aer Travel Pack shines. Having the abundance in organization is a good thing. Where most packs fail, the travel pack delivers. The pouches can all be filled out and will not restrict other pockets. I tend to forget where I put my stuff and wind up using sometime to actually trying to find a specific item. It takes sometime to assign and remember where you put your gear.

The shoe compartment (fits up to US size 13) does take space out of the main compartment. When I put my shoes (size 11) in the bag, the position is a little awkward. There is a little space left on either side of the shoes and it makes using packing cubes all the more harder. Other than this, the main compartment functions well like a opened suitcase.

As for the front pockets, I would have opted for a bigger and deeper space for the bottom. It’s main function is to provide a space for laptop chargers. I found it difficult to fit older and bigger adapters inside.

Size & shape

The travel pack is big; 33litres. Fitting up to 4-5 days of clothing plus a pair of shoes, it can look hideous on someone with a smaller figure. Don’t worry though, the bag is supposed to be big and it will look over sized. I find the size to be just right for short trips and potentially long one if packed correctly. Moreover, the pack fits very nicely into aircraft overhead compartments. The shape is functional to say the least; it may not appeal to fashion gurus. Being rectangular, it can be easily organized with packing cubes.

Price

The price of the Aer travel pack is USD$220. It is pricey, but given the quality, I would say it is a good bargain.

Bottom Line

The Aer Travel pack provides a good alternative for your carry on luggage and allows you to bring all your travel essentials on your back. The build quality is excellent and the organisation is top-notch. But the bag is bulk, big and a little on the heavy side: 3.9 lbs (similar weight to a laptop!). The sturdiness though, makes the bag reliable on long journeys. Highly recommended for a quality “one-bag” experience.
