Later today, if a friend of mine were to recommend a place for us to eat or go out for a drink, how would I decide on my response to that invitation? I would almost never turn down an opportunity for some adventurous eating, but I’m always looking for something new and exciting — so I’m definitely going to do my homework. The very first thing that I would do is probably the same thing that most people would do.
I’d google it! The very first impression that so many of us are going to have for a restaurant or bar is going to be their website. Let’s keep it simple by sticking to mid-level dining, as I feel that’s where the industry has the most for room for expression and making impressionable websites to draw food-lovers and adventure-seekers. Today I’d like to discuss the core concepts of web design for an up and coming restaurant.
Houston’s Pondicheri Cafe homepage. This unique little restaurant sells colorful memorabilia, delicious baked goods to take home, and, of course, bomb-ass Indian street food — I’d say their front page depicts that quite well.
We live in a world where everybody is trying to be unique. The more of us there are, the more unique and refined we must become in order to stick out of the crowd. This is unbelievably true for restaurants! A new customer needs to understand the ethos of a restaurant before they decide to make the plunge, particularly in our current world of mixing and matching different cuisines with different price ranges and clientele. Custom design is key. A brand needs to be distinctive, as that brand’s identity can make or break an experience. I’d be more inclined to try out a new place if I feel that it is giving an experience that is established and unique. Brand identity can be showcased through informational pages on the site, menus that are easily accessible to both returning and new visitors, and ,did I mention? — Photos. So many great photos. Photos of food. Photos of a table laughing while their server or sommelier opens a bottle of wine with a smile. Photos of a well-lit patio. Photogenic chefs literally throwing cabbage across the kitchen during rush hour. You get the picture.
A photogenic Chef throwing dough. Note how accessible all the restaurant’s information is on the page. Any user visiting the site will understand that this is a fun, clean, and happy-vibes place. The options to order online and make reservations are right at a user’s fingertips. Menus, contact information, hours of operation, and employment applications are immediately available as well.
