5 Reasons Why I Am Glad I Signed Up for the Thinkful Data Science Boot Camp

If you are looking to learn data science and make a career shift, you have probably checked out some “boot camps” (i.e. short, intensive courses, not necessarily through a university). In fact, there are so many options out there that it can be a bit overwhelming.

So, to aid in your decision making, here are five reasons why I recommend the Thinkful Data Science Flex program (based on my personal experience):

1. With the Flex program, I can spend more time on the concepts I have a harder time with

Thinkful designed the Data Science Flex program so that you can do it while working. Additionally, you can revisit all the material if you need to. It has been really nice for me to be able to go back to concepts I can’t remember and get a refresher, but this isn’t possible with other programs because live lectures are not recorded.

2. My data science mentor has been awesome

When I was assigned a mentor who lives in Turkey, I was skeptical (mostly about the time difference and the fact that I would never get to meet him in person). My mentor has turned out to be incredibly helpful and encouraging. His resume is also impressive — he has a Ph.D. and is working on a book for O’Reilly about advanced models for financial analysis. I have appreciated his advice and technical expertise during this challenging program.

3. It has shown me the power of LinkedIn and other virtual and in-person networking tools

Ok, I had no idea how great LinkedIn could be until I pushed myself to go outside of my comfort zone on the platform (because of assignments in the Thinkful curriculum). I’ve reached out to managers and gotten responses, I have posted articles and received positive feedback, and I have made a ton of new connections. I am grateful that this program has helped me with my virtual networking skills.

Thinkful also gave me the push I needed to attend a Women in Data Science networking meetup group. This was a wonderful experience, and I connected with some cool women that I would never have met otherwise.

4. Because it is all online, it allows for more flexibility and also costs less

The all-online and flexible format require extra internal motivation, but if you can manage it, it can save you money and stress! Thinkful gives you the ability to “pause” your program and essentially take a limited number of days off, with no financial consequences.

Additionally, I appreciated that the Thinkful Data Science flex program was so much cheaper than other in-person data science boot camps — it was often just slightly over half the cost!

5. After five and a half months, I feel very confident in my abilities as an entry-level data scientist

I think the fact that I have established myself as a data science blogger speaks to the depth of content on Thinkful and how they provide you the resources to effectively learn the topic you choose to dive in to.

I have had interviews for data analyst and data scientist positions, and as I wrap up the course, I feel far more confident in my technical skills than I thought I would.
