Overcoming Impostor Syndrome

Overcoming Impostor Syndrome

You Are Good Enough. How to deal with impostor syndrome. One of the first steps to overcoming impostor feelings is to acknowledge the thoughts and put them in perspective. “Simply observing that thought as opposed to engaging it” can be helpful, says Ervin. “We can help teach people to let go and more critically question those thoughts.

I wanted to dedicate this piece to talk about impostor syndrome. 95% of programmers go through it at some point. It might be very brief and not a big deal, or it might continue to plague you for years throughout your career. This article is not only for developers. It is relevant to any profession. By definition, impostor syndrome is the persistent, inability to believe that your success is deserved or achieved as a result of your efforts or skills. In other words, you feel like a fake in your industry, like everyone around you knows more than you, or have a, a better capacity for learning than you.

So to better define impostor syndrome and what it feels like, I have often asked myself a lot of questions throughout my journey. Am I smart enough to be a programmer? Growing up, a lot of us looked at programmers as these nerdy geniuses who did excellent in school. That actually could not be further from the truth. I found a love for programming and web development around six years ago and just never stopped doing it. Not being a genius never stopped me from pushing on. It has always been a climb, and you have to start from somewhere.

I wondered if I belonged. If you are like me and you are not the stereotypical nerd, you may feel like you do not belong. Just know that that stereotype is a myth, and it does not matter what you look like, how you dress or what race you are. What they care about is if you can deliver, and you know what you are doing. With technology, as long as you are good at what you do, no one can never say no to you.

I asked myself more than a thousand times if I made a mistake choosing this path. This question might hit you like a ton of bricks. Sometimes your coworkers or classmates may seem to know what they are doing. That they know exactly how to execute their plan and so on, and you feel lost because you have not gotten some concept right or you are a bit slow. You might end up feeling like you want to quit and do something else, probably something simpler. Some people end up missing out on a career in which they would have loved and progressed. I mean, we all feel this way at some point. If this is what you want, and you have the drive to do what it takes, ignore this notion and move on, cause you will be glad that you did.

The sheer volume of information got me thinking if it was even possible for me to learn what this job requires. In tech, this is usually a daunting question enough to make you want to quit just by looking at all the available options. There is no way to learn everything. The good news is that you do not have to. You need only get into a specific realm of technologies or a particular stack and stick with it. If you are learning web development, you might learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, some framework, maybe a backend language and framework, a database and git, and that is possible. It will not come easy, but it is possible for just about anyone that wants it has the drive to learn what is needed. Focus on one first, then advance slowly.
