Automating Event Management with Google Apps Script

Today I will be showing how to write a simple script that allows you to link events that are organized into a spreadsheet and link them to your personal or a shared calendar.

Boost your productivity with code! Learn how to connect Sheets to Calendar via Apps Script to automate your schedule.

Introduction

Google Apps Script is a scripting tool that allows you to link all your Google Apps from one place with JavaScript code. The development environment (accessible at script.googgle.com ) provides several high-level application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow you to interact with your favorite Google Apps (create, modify Docs, read and write Sheets, create Calendar events etc).

Today I will be showing how to write a simple script that allows you to link events that are organized into a spreadsheet and link them to your personal or a shared calendar.

Motivation

At work, I do not often use Google spreadsheets but I find it very useful to manage my personal activities, such as expenses, trips or study schedules. Today, I connected with an old friend and we decided to resume our old habit of watching movies every Friday, though remotely because of the current pandemic. I quickly created a Google Sheet spreadsheet so that we could list the movies we would watch every week.

Once my tab was created and I had a list of movies to watch and a set of dates, I thought, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to sync this spreadsheet to my calendar? A quick Google browse led me to a blogpost by G Suite developer advocate Joanna Smith. That short post and the YouTube video that goes with it presents how to do this exact task using Google Apps Script. To the disappointment of many commenters in the YouTube video, the code snippet for the task is not available anywhere for a quick copy, paste and go.

Fortunately, the code is rather trivial and we will show how to easily make it better with a few extra lines of code.
