If you do not pay attention to thread gauge calibration then the integrity of the thread gauges you are purchasing and using could be compromised. In case you do not know what is thread gauge calibration and what is its significance then here are a few important factors that you should know about calibration.

When you order a custom trapezoidal thread gauge or a custom Whitworth thread gauge or for that matter any thread gauge, how will you know that it is exactly matching your requirements and specifications? Java Virtual Machine (JVM) generates 3 critical artifacts that are useful for optimizing the performance and troubleshooting production problems. Those artifacts are:

  1. Garbage collection (GC) log
  2. Thread Dump
  3. Heap Dump

In this article, let’s try to understand these 3 critical artifacts, where to use them, how do they look, how to capture them, how to analyze them, and their differences.

1. Garbage Collection Log

a) What Is a GC Log?

GC Log contains garbage collection events related information. It will indicate how many GC events ran, what type of GC events they are (i.e. Young GC or Full GC), how long each GC event pause the application, how much objects did each GC event reclaim.

Kernel Scheduling Entity

Before jumping into the threading model. Let’s understand the kernel scheduling entity. For any kernel, the scheduling entity could be a process or thread. Some kernels are not multi-threaded, the scheduling entity will be processed. Most of the recent kernels are multi-threaded. This helped in general for someone implementing threading in userspace vs depending on kernel threading.

Mx1 — There are two different possible operating systems, where scheduling entity for kernel is a process or a thread. Either case one would have implemented Mx1 threading model in userspace.

In this implementation, kernel is not aware of any of the user threads. a scheduled user thread maps to kernel thread/process based on the scheduling entity in kernel. So there is only one thread/process in kernel which is serving the user-space scheduler.

The main advantage of this mechanism is that it will not create much load on the kernel.

The main disadvantage with this approach is and depends on the way userspace scheduler is implemented, if a thread within the process blocks since the underlying kernel scheduling entity does not know about other user threads, it will block the entire process. So, even there are some schedulable threads in user space, it cannot schedule them.

Some implementations take care of it by creating another thread and schedule runnable user-space threads. But most of the implementations do not do this.

1x1 — In this mechanism, there is one to one mapping for the user-space threads to kernel threads. POSIX threads implemented in Linux use 1x1 model.

The main advantage of this mechanism is userspace scheduler is simplified since it completely depends on kernel scheduling.

The main disadvantage is that it generates too much load on the kernel. A process could have thousands of threads and causes kernel to create that many threads.

What is a Thread?

A thread refers to a separate flow of execution.

In simple words, it is a sequence of instructions within a program that can be executed independently of the other code.

See a thread as a subset of a program.

Threads make it possible for a program to have two things happening at once.

However, in most Python 3 implementations, threads do not actually execute concurrently, they only appear to.

You may be thinking of threading as a situation where you have two or more processors running on your program at the same time, with each processor doing an independent task.

You are almost right in your thinking.

Yes, the threads may be running on different processors, but only one of them will run at a time.

To have multiple tasks run simultaneously, a non-standard implementation of Python is required.

You can write some of the code in a different language, or you can use multiprocessing which comes with an extra overhead.

For CPython users, threading may not speed up all tasks.

This is because of the way it implements Python.

It requires the interaction with GIL (Global Interpreter Lock) that limits only one thread to run at a time.
