What is the purpose of miners and proof of work in bitcoin network?

I wanted to know the purpose of miners. I know mining introduces new bitcoins into network and also checks the transactions in that block. But why mining is done by human effort? What's the purpose of that big long proof of work? Why isn't the mining process automated?
