7 Habits You Can Master to Become a Good Programmer

Habits that show good results.

Curiosity, mental challenges, ambition, and finally, the average earnings mean that working in IT attracts new people. Age does not matter here — both young people after graduation and those who have already started their professional careers behind, but are looking for new opportunities and new challenges, learn programming.

When you are looking for an answer to the question “how to become a programmer,” chances are good to find dozens of tutorials or courses to guide you through the initial stages of learning.

When you start your self-study, acquiring more advanced skills becomes natural to you. On the other hand, hardly anyone pays attention to what to do to maintain good health and creativity in the programming profession.

In self-study, it’s hard to overestimate the value of good habits — it’s one of the better investments you can make in the future. Good practices and habits will make you learn to program and make you a good programmer for longer. Literally.

1. Always accepting projects big or small

2. Always learning algorithms and structures.

3. Always practicing clean code.

4. Always writing tests

5. Always learning the language and tools for it.

6. Always socializing with other people.

7. Always maintaining physical health.

The 7 Habits of Data Science

In the world of data science, most of the work I do is exploring unknown realms (read: data). The workflow is more or less similar to every project iteration. Data gathering — exploration — process—modeling — test — deploy—monitor — present — repeat. I wonder then, how can I make sure I’m not just repeating the same cycle over and over again? How can I do better? The answer I found is: adapt my habit. How you:

  • view and reframe data science problems, create mutual collaboration, andmaintain effective communication

are habits that are often overlooked. Remember, data science isn’t about building the best model but making positive impacts through data. Your habit affects your respond to each problem.Inspired by Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peoplechanged me.It’s still a powerful book to read for me. Data science or not, applying these habits in my workflow boosts up my productivity. I want to share with you, these habits that have put me in a positive frame of mind.So here’s my take on the 7 habits, seen through my lens of data science.

As we go through it, ask yourself, do you need to work on these habits?

1 — Be Proactive

Well, not that kind of active. Instead, take initiative for the greater good.Data science isn’t about doing what stakeholders want. It’s the tool to growth hack and solves business problems. No one understands the data more than you do. An effective data guy should recommend on how data can be utilized! People may not be aware of the power of data.Focus on what value the data can bring!

6 Things That Makes You a Good Programmer

Consistency

being consistent will build your skills. You are not expected to write flawless code, but when you keep coding, you will end up with experiences & knowledge.

Laziness

The author of The Perl Programming Languages, Larry Wall, mentioned in his book three good characteristics in good programmers: laziness, impatience, and hubris. If you want to find the best method to achieve something, then ask a lazy person. Find the quickest, most efficient means to accomplish a task. Automate some processes and save your time.

Willingness to Learn

Be more willing to learn: skills and expertise a programmer has today will likely be outdated in a few years. It’s important to become a programmer that follows the latest trends.

Debugging Skills

Develop your debugging skills. When software doesn’t give you the expected results, you are required to get to the source of the problem fast and effectively. Guardedly review your code and look up possible issues until you find the answer.

Making an Impact

Share your work and receive criticism and validation. The impact that you create is what makes you a good programmer. You can create websites, mobile applications, frameworks, or libraries to share online. Getting more recognition opens up new doors.

Entrepreneurship Mindset

Market your work for more exposure. If you get people to use your projects, you will be considered a good engineer. When you have a product backed up by customers, more opportunities will come your way. If one of your projects takes off, then you have a running business.

In summary, think of the easiest solutions to problems, keep up with the changes in the languages you use, have a scheduled time to work on new challenges and be more consistent, and make sure your work has an outlet to receive customers, validation and criticism.
