With reports of felines testing positive for the virus or antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19, researchers set out to determine if domestic animals or livestock were susceptible to infection with the virus.

Shi and colleagues found that ferrets and cats were susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, but that the virus did not replicate in when inoculated into dogs, pigs, chickens, or ducks. In an experiment with 3 pairs of cats, one of the pairs showed airborne transmission. One of the cats inoculated with the virus transmitted the virus to a cat housed in an adjacent cage. The other two pairs did not show evidence of transmission. This study consisted of 10 subadult cats (6–9 months old) and 10 juvenile cats (70–100 days old).

Halfmann and colleagues focused solely on cats and SARS-CoV-2. They also found that within 3 days of inoculating cats with the virus, the virus was detectable in nasal swabs. Furthermore, housing the inoculated cats with non-inoculated cats resulted in all of the cats becoming infected within 5 days. This study consisted of 3 inoculated animals and 3 non-inoculated animals. The animals were between 15 and 18 weeks old (105–126 days).
