How to Create an ADVANCED ReactJS Image Slider

Add cascading and scaling effects to a boring, basic image slider.

The general idea of what we’re going to do is this:

We’re going to create two components.

The first component is going to be a simple JSX DIV that holds all of the images.

The second component is going to be a JSX DIV element that we’ll use to hold images (we’ll refer to images as Cards going forward).

We’re going to stack a bunch of cards on top of one another.

We’ll then order the cards, first to last.

Offset the cards so that some cards are overlapping one another.

We’ll fix the z-axis to make the cards look cascaded.

Then we’ll scale the cards to give a nice look to our slider.

Let’s begin.

We’ll start by creating a “Deck.js” ReactJS CLASS component.

There will be a JSX DIV element in the render; this will be the container for the cards.

Note:

1. We need a reference to this div so we can manipulate the cards later.

2. The ‘width’ and ‘height’ of our DIV is the ‘width’ and ‘height’ of one image; we need to set it here; if we don’t, calculations won’t work when we need to transform cards.

Let’s quickly jump to our “Card.js” component for a moment.

We’ll create a “Card.js” ReactJS FUNCTION component.

There will be one JSX DIV element; we can put an image in there later.

Note:

1. The dimensions of the card are the exact same dimensions as our “Deck.js” parent DIV.

2. Pay attention to how we’re structuring the styling of the “Card.js”. Some of the attributes are hard-coded in our styles object;

The dynamic attributes — like scale, position,_ z-index_ — come from the parent “Deck.js” component. You’ll see why later on.

3. The ‘backgroundColor’ prop coming from the parent is unnecessary; I’ve just added it to make visualizing the slider easier.
