The Impact Of IBM’s Move To Split On Its AI Initiatives

In one of the biggest news of the year, IBM recently announced that it is splitting its IT services business into a new company, temporarily named NewCo. The move headed by its CEO, Arvind Krishna, will lead to diversification of the world’s first big computing firm away from its legacy businesses to focus on high-margin cloud computing and AI business. The company believes that with this move, both the companies will be on an improved growth trajectory with more remarkable ability to partner and capture new opportunities.

With this, IBM becomes the big first computing firm to split up from its legacy business to focus on the new tech. The brand new IBM will accelerate and focus on the $1 trillion hybrid-cloud opportunity, whereas the NewCo. will focus on its services business with a revenue of around $19 billion. The NewCo will provide technical support to 4,600 clients in 115 countries, and is expected to record an expense of nearly $5 billion to be incurred in the separation and operational changes.

Krishna believes that this move will help the company revive growth after almost a decade of shrinking revenue, with a strategic focus on each of the businesses. “Now is the right time to create two market-leading companies focused on what they do best”, the company stated.

IBM LinuxONE is a mainframe that exclusively runs Linux, but where does Linux live in the general mainframe ecosystem of operating systems?

First, let’s talk about the terms used when running Linux on the mainframe. LinuxONE is a hardware product line. You can think of it as the sister to IBM Z, with similar hardware and specifications, but it only runs Linux. This is in contrast to when we use the term “Linux on IBM Z” or simply “Linux on Z,” which can be either Linux running on LinuxONE or Linux running on an IBM Z system — typically along with other operating systems like z/OS.

Linux itself was first introduced to the mainframe as a community-driven project in 1998, and then in December 1999 IBM released their first series of patches for the 2.2.13 kernel. This makes Linux a relative newcomer as far as operating systems go in the mainframe space. Over the years, Linux on Z became a staple of many organizations running alongside operating systems like z/OS, z/VSE, and z/TPF, which people more frequently think of when you’re talking about mainframes. In 2015, the first LinuxONE was released, cementing Linux as an operating system that was here to stay on the platform.

Behind IBM’s Autonomous Chemistry Lab

With no stoppage of the COVID pandemic in the foreseeable future, drug discovery has been a critical concern for the healthcare industry. But, in reality, it takes around a decade with approximately $10 million to discover a new drug, get it tested and bring it to the market. Such a delayed process can be majorly attributed to the tedious process of repetitive experiments to bring out the drug. Thus, to omit this significant hurdle in drug discovery, IBM has launched an autonomous chemistry lab combining AI, robotics and cloud technology — RoboRXN.

A cloud-based AI model, RoboRXN has been developed to perform autonomously, like a robot, using machine learning algorithms to produce chemicals and drugs in a laboratory with little to no human intervention. Not only a development like that can optimise the drug discovery process by reducing the production time, but can also lower down the cost, allowing scientists to bring out new drugs in health crises, keeping the norms of social distancing in place.

IBM has announced that its Cloud Satellite edge computing service, based on Red Hat OpenShift, is now generally available in any environment — cloud, on-premises or at the edge. This unifying cloud services layer will allow customers to have control over their critical data, regardless of where it resides.

IBM Cloud Satellite will allow businesses to deploy cloud services securely across public and private clouds, on-premise, or at the edge. It will also help enterprises to deliver low latency, at the edge, without compromising on the levels of security, data privacy, interoperability, and open standards of hybrid cloud environments, stated IBM in its official release.
