Top 12 Ways To Learn AWS (for free)

When you look at technical job ads these days, many require some knowledge about Amazon Web Services. Regardless of whether you are a programmer, data scientist, data engineer, DevOps, database administrator, data analyst, or a manager , knowing AWS is an important skill. Even if some company uses a different cloud provider, the main concepts of cloud storage, compute, or networking, are quite similar across all vendors. In the following, I list free resources that are extremely helpful in learning AWS.

1. edX courses offered by AWS

AWS created a range of high-quality courses hosted on edX (see link below). Those courses will walk you through a range of services with numerous demos, exercises, and reviews of important concepts along the way. There is an option to pay around $100 per course and obtain a certificate, but you don’t need to do that — you can just audit the course for free and gain a lot of value from it.

2. Qwicklabs

I’m a strong proponent of learning by doing. Qwicklabs is a platform that provides a preconfigured cloud environment, which is especially valuable for people who are just starting working with AWS. The platform allows you to try out different services without fear of doing something wrong or getting a large bill at the end in case you forget to shut down some resources.

Even though you will likely not learn as much as doing everything yourself in your own AWS account, the platform provides you with an environment where all resources you need to learn a particular service (ex. IAM roles, Security Groups) are set up. On top of that, the tutorials give you a short introduction to a particular service and step-by-step instructions to accomplish a specific task.

3. AWS free tier

There is no better way of learning anything than by actually experimenting with it in real-life. AWS offers a free tier for your first 12 months, which gives you (limited) access to the most popular services. You can create your own account, set up a billing alarm to avoid unnecessary charges, and start provisioning resources and interacting with services of your choice. Here you can find a detailed overview of services covered by the free tier:

For example, you can get free 250 hours of SageMaker resources with a t2.medium notebook for two months.

4. The official training website

If you want to understand AWS in-depth, the best resource is likely the official training and certification page, which includes numerous free resources that cover both theoretical foundations and practical implications of using specific services. I can recommend it, especially if you plan to get certified, as there are many courses specifically designed to prepare for a certification exam.

5. AWS YouTube channel

AWS has an official YouTube channel that includes tutorials, videos from conferences, and demos showing how to work with their services. Ideally, you can use it in combination with a free tier account so that you can directly try out things you’ve learned.

Chromium-net-errors: Chromium Network Errors for Node.js

Chromium Network Errors

Provides Chromium network errors found in net_error_list.h as custom error classes that can be conveniently used in Node.js, Electron apps and browsers.

The errors correspond to the error codes that are provided in Electron's did-fail-load events of the WebContents class and the webview tag.

Features

  • No dependencies.
  • 100% test coverage.
  • ES6 build with import and export, and a CommonJS build. Your bundler can use the ES6 modules if it supports the "module" or "jsnext:main" directives in the package.json.
  • Daily cron-triggered checks for updates on net_error_list.h on Travis CI to always get the most up-to-date list of errors.

Installation

npm install chromium-net-errors --save
import * as chromiumNetErrors from 'chromium-net-errors';
// or
const chromiumNetErrors = require('chromium-net-errors');

Example Use in Electron

import { app, BrowserWindow } from 'electron';
import * as chromiumNetErrors from 'chromium-net-errors';

app.on('ready', () => {
  const win = new BrowserWindow({
    width: 800,
    height: 600,
  });

  win.webContents.on('did-fail-load', (event) => {
    try {
      const Err = chromiumNetErrors.getErrorByCode(event.errorCode);
      throw new Err();
    } catch (err) {
      if (err instanceof chromiumNetErrors.NameNotResolvedError) {
        console.error(`The name '${event.validatedURL}' could not be resolved:\n  ${err.message}`);
      } else {
        console.error(`Something went wrong while loading ${event.validatedURL}`);
      }
    }
  });

  win.loadURL('http://blablanotexist.com');
});

WrongVersionOnEarlyDataError

TLS 1.3 early data was offered, but the server responded with TLS 1.2 or earlier. This is an internal error code to account for a backwards-compatibility issue with early data and TLS 1.2. It will be received before any data is returned from the socket. The request should be retried with early data disabled.

See https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc8446#appendix-D.3 for details.

Tls13DowngradeDetectedError

TLS 1.3 was enabled, but a lower version was negotiated and the server returned a value indicating it supported TLS 1.3. This is part of a security check in TLS 1.3, but it may also indicate the user is behind a buggy TLS-terminating proxy which implemented TLS 1.2 incorrectly. (See https://crbug.com/boringssl/226.)

The server responded with a certificate whose common name did not match the host name. This could mean:

An attacker has redirected our traffic to their server and is presenting a certificate for which they know the private key.

The server is misconfigured and responding with the wrong cert.

The user is on a wireless network and is being redirected to the network's login page.

The OS has used a DNS search suffix and the server doesn't have a certificate for the abbreviated name in the address bar.

CertAuthorityInvalidError

The server responded with a certificate that is signed by an authority we don't trust. The could mean:

An attacker has substituted the real certificate for a cert that contains their public key and is signed by their cousin.
