Have you ever viewed a LinkedIn job posting only to be disheartened by the number of people who have already applied? Job hunting is an arduous task. It can even be daunting if you are a college student — only 41% of U.S. college students feel well prepared for their future careers, according to a 2018 Future Workforce Survey by McGraw-Hill Education. The whole recruitment and hiring process is a full-time job in itself. At times, the process can feel impersonal and outright demoralizing. A headhunter or a referral will make life easier, but what if these options aren’t available? This guide will help you get your resume, portfolio, or GitHub in front of the right person.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty, it’s important to manage expectations. As trite as it sounds, job hunting is a marathon and not a sprint. Hiring managers could be juggling multiple open roles and candidates at the same time. Unless there is an urgent need to fill the role, the timeline from application to offer letter could take weeks. Stay patient — I know it’s hard especially when we expect everything to happen overnight.
Find the Right Person
Once you’ve submitted your resume through the company’s website, you should attempt to identify and reach out to the hiring manager. Job listings occasionally post “this role reports into the manager of X” in the description. This is very useful as that person is the key decision-maker. You can search “manager of X at (Company Name)” on LinkedIn or Google to locate the hiring manager. Another strategy is to search for the department/team on LinkedIn or Google and suss out the more senior people as they have the most clout when it comes to hiring.
For example, in this software engineer listing at Apple, the keyword is _Global Business Intelligence. _Upon searching the term on LinkedIn, you will find many current Apple employees on that team. Once you’ve pinpointed a viable contact, you can use the free trial version of RocketReach to find his/her work email.
Keep It Short
I got the hiring manager’s email. Now what?
A cold-email puts your resume directly in the hiring manager’s inbox and this is one of the best ways to get noticed. While it’s tempting to list all the reasons you are a good fit, many people aren’t ready to read a whole essay about your candidacy. It is best to keep your email brief and concise — a sentence to introduce yourself, express your interest in the role, and call to action should suffice. Here is a basic template:
Hi [Hiring Manager’s Name],
I applied to [Job Title] role at [Company] and wanted to reach out to express my interest. [Team Name] consistently succeeds in [an example of team’s accomplishment]. My background is in [description of your experience or coursework]. I firmly believe I have the relevant skills to thrive on your team, as my experience ranges from [example] to [example].
For your consideration, I have attached my resume. If you have any questions or would like to chat, please let me know.
Read the Outcome
Cold-emailing results in two possible outcomes; you receive a response or you receive no response. If you get a response, congratulations! Here is a non-exhaustive list of potential responses from the hiring manager:
For no responses, you should follow-up a week from the initial email to express your continuing interest. If you’ve contacted the wrong person, apologize and graciously ask if they can lead you to the right person.
There can be many emails, phone calls, video calls, or in-person meetings before you receive a hiring decision. Track the jobs you’ve applied for in a spreadsheet with the following columns: position, the person of contact, email, date of contact, and last contacted.

In this article, I share what I think is one of the best tips when it comes to design interviews.
As a junior UX designer, I’ve been asked a few times by my peers: what is the most essential UX interview tip I have?
Well, to this question I have a very simple answer,** just be honest**… well, this might sound like a no brainer, but it seems to me that not many junior designers know about it or want to apply it.
I had the chance to speak with a few designers and I discovered that some tend towards being a little bit insincere when going through interviews for design positions. It’s normal to be intimidated when going through an interview process and you might want to act as if you have more experience than you have to secure the job.
Well, I’m here to suggest that that’s not the right approach. I fact, recruiters know in advance that as a junior designer you won’t have many years worth of experience so instead of being insincere it’s better to show up with an open mindset and being honest.
A mindset of learning and improving is always welcomed and valued in today’s world. Simple answers like “I might not know X because I’ve haven’t had the chance to get at it but I can learn it as I’m an avid Lerner” go a long way with recruiters.
Put yourself on your recruiter’s shoes, would you rather employ someone “that answers to 90% of the requirements’’ but doesn’t show a growth mindset, or would you employ someone “that answers to 70% of the requirements’’ but shows it’s the thirst for learning and improving?
That’s not to say that you’ll show up with no qualifications at all. You still have to have a certain level of expertise. “Don’t be the guy with 30hrs of experience using Sketch and 1hr of prototyping experience calling himself a UX designer”.
Some skills can be rapidly learned with just a little bit of discipline and will so don’t be afraid to answer with a no if you haven’t had experience with certain techniques due to lack of opportunity of doing so, for example. It’s always easier to learn something new than being perceived as untrustworthy because you said you were qualified to do something but you finally weren’t.
keep in mind that being sincere is always the way… not just during job interviews but in life. Anytime you’re being insincere to achieve something, most probably, the lie will end catching you back and having the opposite effect you wanted it to have.
Anyway, I’ll stop with my “life lessons” and I’ll wish you a very successful interview.
