How to Use D3 with Angular

Introduction

Hello readers. This blog will teach us about d3js and how to integrate it with our angular applications. We will also be working on some important events in d3js. Let’s get started.

What is D3?

D3 stands for Data-Driven Documents. It is a Javascript library for manipulating documents based on data. With the increasing amount of data being produced daily, visualization of data is the best option to convey the information to the users. D3 allows you to have control over your data representation and lets you add some interactivity to it.

You can create different types of charts with the help of d3 like bar charts, bubble charts, scatter plots, etc. In this blog, we will be just going through some basic concepts to use in d3.

Advantages of D3

Since it is a Javascript library, it can be easily integrated with any JS framework like angular, or react.

It is open source so you can add your own features.

It is lightweight and fast and works well with large datasets.

D3 internally uses the web standards like HTML, CSS, and SVG so no new learning is required.

Setting up Angular and D3

Firstly, create a fresh angular application with the help of the below command.

ng new d3Integration

 

This will create a new angular application. Now we will install d3 in our application. Use the below two commands to install it.

npm install d3
npm install @types/d3 --save-dev

Now after installing it successfully, we are ready to start working with d3 concepts.

We will start by adding an SVG to our HTML file then add some simple shapes and then some events.

In your app.component.html, add these lines where we provide SVG the width and the height only.

Right now you will not see anything except the heading on your localhost.

Now let us append a rectangle to it.

Create a new function and add these lines. You can call this function in ngOnInit.

Here you can see we are using d3.select(). The d3.select() method returns the first element in your DOM based on the selector. We selected the SVG element and then appended the rectangle with properties like width, height, and color.

Similarly, we can add a circle to our SVG. Create another function for it and add this code.

Here cx and cy are the x and y coordinates of the center of the circle and r is the radius.

Adding Events

Now we have created two shapes, let us try adding some events to them.

Let us change the color of the shapes by hovering over them. We will use the mouseover and mouseout event of d3 for it. You can modify the same function and add these two events to it.

Similarly, we can add to the circle as well.

Conclusion

We learned what is d3 and some of its advantages. Although there are other advantages as well. We then created an Angular application and looked into the basic concepts of d3 adding an SVG element and appending some shapes to it. We also added some events to them. This is just the beginning. D3 has much more to explore and is probably the best charting library you can use for your large amount of data. Perl script converts PDF files to Gerber format

Pdf2Gerb generates Gerber 274X photoplotting and Excellon drill files from PDFs of a PCB. Up to three PDFs are used: the top copper layer, the bottom copper layer (for 2-sided PCBs), and an optional silk screen layer. The PDFs can be created directly from any PDF drawing software, or a PDF print driver can be used to capture the Print output if the drawing software does not directly support output to PDF.

The general workflow is as follows:

  1. Design the PCB using your favorite CAD or drawing software.
  2. Print the top and bottom copper and top silk screen layers to a PDF file.
  3. Run Pdf2Gerb on the PDFs to create Gerber and Excellon files.
  4. Use a Gerber viewer to double-check the output against the original PCB design.
  5. Make adjustments as needed.
  6. Submit the files to a PCB manufacturer.

Please note that Pdf2Gerb does NOT perform DRC (Design Rule Checks), as these will vary according to individual PCB manufacturer conventions and capabilities. Also note that Pdf2Gerb is not perfect, so the output files must always be checked before submitting them. As of version 1.6, Pdf2Gerb supports most PCB elements, such as round and square pads, round holes, traces, SMD pads, ground planes, no-fill areas, and panelization. However, because it interprets the graphical output of a Print function, there are limitations in what it can recognize (or there may be bugs).

Angular environment setup

Install Angular in Easy Steps

For Installing Angular on your Machine, there are 2 prerequisites:

  • Node.js
  • npm Package Manager
Node.js

First you need to have Node.js installed as Angular require current, active LTS or maintenance LTS version of Node.js

Download and Install Node.js version suitable for your machine’s operating system.

Npm Package Manager

Angular, Angular CLI and Angular applications are dependent on npm packages. By installing Node.js, you have automatically installed the npm Package manager which will be the base for installing angular in your system. To check the presence of npm client and Angular version check of npm client, run this command:

  1. npm -v

Installing Angular CLI

  • Open Terminal/Command Prompt
  • To install Angular CLI, run the below command:
  1. npm install -g @angular/cli

· After executing the command, Angular CLI will get installed within some time. You can check it using the following command

  1. ng --version

Workspace Creation

Now as your Angular CLI is installed, you need to create a workspace to work upon your application. Methods for it are:

  • Using CLI
  • Using Visual Studio Code
1. Using CLI

To create a workspace:

  • Navigate to the desired directory where you want to create your workspace using cd command in the Terminal/Command prompt
  • Then in the directory write this command on your terminal and provide the name of the app which you want to create. In my case I have mentioned DataFlair:
  1. Ng new YourAppName

  • After running this command, it will prompt you to select from various options about the CSS and other functionalities.

Basics of Angular: Part-1

What is Angular? What it does? How we implement it in a project? So, here are some basics of angular to let you learn more about angular.

Angular is a Typescript-based open-source front-end web application platform. The Angular Team at Google and a community of individuals and corporations lead it. Angular lets you extend HTML’s syntax to express your apps’ components clearly. The angular resolves challenges while developing a single page and cross-platform applications. So, here the meaning of the single-page applications in angular is that the index.html file serves the app. And, the index.html file links other files to it.

We build angular applications with basic concepts which are NgModules. It provides a compilation context for components. At the beginning of an angular project, the command-line interface provides a built-in component which is the root component. But, NgModule can add a number of additional components. These can be created through a template or loaded from a router. This is what a compilation context about.

What is a Component in Angular?

Components are key features in Angular. It controls a patch of the screen called a view. A couple of components that we create on our own helps to build a whole application. In the end, the root component or the app component holds our entire application. The component has its business logic that it does to support the view inside the class. The class interacts with the view through an API of properties and methods. All the components added by us in the application are not linked to the index.html. But, they link to the app.component.html through the selectors. A component can be a component and not only a typescript class by adding a decorator @Component. Then, for further access, a class can import it. The decorator contains some metadata like selector, template, and style. Here’s an example of how a component decorator looks like:

Role of App Module

Modules are the package of functionalities of our app. It gives Angular the information about which features does my app has and what feature it uses. It is an empty Typescript class, but we transform it by adding a decorator @NgModule. So, we have four properties that we set up on the object pass to @NgModule. The four properties are declarations, imports, providers, and bootstrap. All the built-in new components add up to the declarations array in @NgModule.

What is Data Binding?

Data Binding is the communication between the Typescript code of the component and the template. So, we have different kinds of data binding given below:

  • When there is a requirement to output data from our Typescript code in the HTML template. String interpolation handles this purpose like {{data}} in HTML file. Property Binding is also used for this purpose like [property] = “data”.
  • When we want to trigger any event like clicking a button. Event Binding works while we react to user events like (event) = “expression”.
  • When we can react to user events and output something at the same time. Two-way Binding is used like [(ngModel)] = “data”.

Visualizing data with NGX-Charts in Angular

Data Science, Data Analytics, Big Data, these are the buzz words of today’s world. A huge amount of data is being generated and analyzed every day. So communicating the insights from that data becomes crucial. Charts help visualize the data and communicate the result of the analysis with charts, it becomes easy to understand the data.

There are a lot of libraries for angular that can be used to build charts. In this blog, we will look at one such library, NGX-Charts. We will see how to use it in angular and how to build data visualizations.

What we will cover:

  1. Installing ngx-chart.

  2. Building a vertical bar graph.

  3. Building a pie chart.

  4. Building an advanced pie chart.

A brief introduction about NGX-Charts

NGX-Chart charting framework for angular2+. It’s open-source and maintained by Swimlane.

NGX-Charts does not merely wrap d3, nor any other chart engine for that matter. It is using Angular to render and animate the SVG elements with all of its binding and speed goodness and uses d3 for the excellent math functions, scales, axis and shape generators, etc. By having Angular do all of the renderings it opens us up to endless possibilities the Angular platform provides such as AoT, Universal, etc.

NGX-Charts supports various chart types like bar charts, line charts, area charts, pie charts, bubble charts, doughnut charts, gauge charts, heatmap, treemap, and number cards.

Installation and Setup

1. Install the ngx-chart package in your angular app.

npm install @swimlane/ngx-charts --save

2. At the time of installing or when you serve your application is you get an error:

You also need to install angular/cdk

3. Import NgxChartsModule from ‘ngx-charts’ in AppModule
