In my quest to better understand Q-scores for coffee grading, I became curious how well the 10 metrics that make up a Q-score are related. I eventually found a database across multiple years, countries, and processes of Q-scores. Some other have looked at some initial numbers, but I did not find analysis on the fundamental question: are the sub-metrics of Q-scores independent variables? How well do coffee graders get to objective grading?

Q-Scores or Q-Grades from Coffee Cupping

A Q-score is a culmination of 10 factors recorded during coffee cupping. I’ve summarized each metric from how I understood it from the SCA Cupping Protocol. They define how to prepare the coffee samples, how to taste, and how to score. I believe there are plenty of resources online to help understand how to do cupping with a quick search.

The final score can also lose points due to defect beans in the patch as there is a standard for how many defects are allowed.

Based these descriptions, I made a matrix of how I would assume the different metrics correlate with one another because many of them have similarities in how they are scored. They are separate metrics, but by definition, they are not completely independent variables.
