Building a Simple Chatbot using NLTK in Python

Alt text

History of chatbots dates back to 1966 when a computer program called ELIZA was invented by Weizenbaum. It imitated the language of a psychotherapist from only 200 lines of code. You can still converse with it here: Eliza.

On similar lines let's create a very basic chatbot utlising the Python's NLTK library.It's a very simple bot with hardly any cognitive skills,but still a good way to get into NLP and get to know about chatbots.

Motivation

The idea of this project was not to create some SOTA chatbot with exceptional cognitive skills but just to utilise and test my Python skills.This was one of my very first projects, created when I just stepped into the world of NLP and I thought of creating a simple chatbot just to make use of my newly acquired knowledge.

Pre-requisites

NLTK(Natural Language Toolkit)

Natural Language Processing with Python provides a practical introduction to programming for language processing.

For platform-specific instructions, read here

Installation of NLTK

pip install nltk

Installing required packages

After NLTK has been downloaded, install required packages

import nltk
from nltk.stem import WordNetLemmatizer
nltk.download('popular', quiet=True) # for downloading popular packages
nltk.download('punkt')
nltk.download('wordnet')

How to run

  • Jupyter Notebook

You can run the chatbot.ipynb which also includes step by step instructions.

  • Through Terminal
python chatbot.py

How to Make a Chatbot in Python?

In the past few years, chatbots in Python have become wildly popular in the tech and business sectors. These intelligent bots are so adept at imitating natural human languages and conversing with humans, that companies across various industrial sectors are adopting them. From e-commerce firms to healthcare institutions, everyone seems to be leveraging this nifty tool to drive business benefits. In this article, we will learn about chatbot using Python and how to make chatbot in python.

What is a Chatbot?

A chatbot is an AI-based software designed to interact with humans in their natural languages. These chatbots are usually converse via auditory or textual methods, and they can effortlessly mimic human languages to communicate with human beings in a human-like manner. A chatbot is arguably one of the best applications of natural language processing.

Chatbots can be categorized into two primary variants – Rule-Based and Self-learning.

The Rule-based approach trains a chatbot to answer questions based on a set of pre-determined rules on which it was initially trained. These set rules can either be very simple or very complex. While rule-based chatbots can handle simple queries quite well, they usually fail to process more complicated queries/requests.

As the name suggests, self-learning bots are chatbots that can learn on their own. These leverage advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to train themselves from instances and behaviours. Naturally, these chatbots are much smarter than rule-based bots. Self-learning bots can be further divided into two categories – Retrieval Based or Generative.

Build a Simple Chatbot in Python

Let’s create a chatbot using the Chatterbot library

In systems, chatbots are used for a variety of reasons, including customer support, request routing, and information collection. While some chatbots make heavy use of word classification, natural language processing, and advanced AI, others just scan for basic keywords and generate responses using common phrases from a library or database.
