Built Orchestration Tools to Its IT Automation Platform

IT automation software provider Puppet has released Puppet Enterprise 2019.8, bringing to the enterprise software the ability to easily include existing Puppet code into your orchestration workflows, among other usability and scalability improvements and patch management upgrades.

Previously, the company had introduced the ability to orchestrate tasks and workflows with logic by running Plans in Puppet Enterprise. Now, Enterprise customers can instead use Puppet code, which they can source from the shared content available on Puppet Forge. For Puppet Chief Technology Officer Abby Kearns, all of these changes add up to one thing — an easier-to-use product that frees up time and lets teams focus on innovating rather than managing these details.

“When Puppet Enterprise started, there was a fair amount of heavy burden on the customer to understand the complexities and how to configure and run it. We’ve spent a lot of time over the last year improving the user experience, making it easier to run things, to share, making the navigation simpler, and really driving that experience across the different consoles — making it easier to get started and do more and more complex things,” explained Kearns.

Where previously users had to run a Bolt plan, with this new functionality they can run plans in Puppet Enterprise, allowing for both model-driven and task-based orchestration. The functionality provides a way to reuse existing Puppet code to orchestrate complex tasks, such as draining a load balancer, applying the appropriate patch updates, or calling VMware to provision a node, among hundreds of other routines, procedures, and states.

Kearns explained that this latest version of Puppet Enterprise allows you to string together these pieces of the “first wave of automation,” again freeing up teams to take on more difficult tasks.

“The whole point of automation, particularly the first wave of automation, isn’t to do something completely out of the blue. It’s meant to say, ‘What are some of the low hanging fruit that your teams spend time manually writing scripts or manually doing themselves? How do we, from the first wave of automation, really start to automate those things so that your teams can start to focus on higher-level concerns?” said Kearns. “In the scheme of things, you have to do that and it’s necessary in order to manage your environment and maintain viability and resiliency, but at the end of the day, is that something someone should be doing full time? Probably not. It’s really going after a lot of that low-level minutia work and automating that so those teams can now focus on higher-level value.”

In addition to accessing shared content from Puppet Forge, Puppet Enterprise 2019.8 also introduces pre-built patching automation for Windows and Linux systems using Puppet Tasks, as well as the ability to use both imperative (work-flow based) and declarative (model-based) approaches to inform the state of their machines.

For instance, unit testing is used to test a small part of the intended application. To test a certain piece of the application’s UI, you would use functional or GUI testing.

Divide Your Automated Testing Efforts

Usually, the creation of different tests is based on QA engineers’ skill levels. It is important to identify the level of experience and skills for each of your team members and divide your automated testing efforts accordingly. For instance, writing automated test scripts requires expert knowledge of scripting languages. Thus, in order to perform these tasks, you should have QA engineers that know the script language provided by the automated testing tool.

Some team members may not be versed in writing automated test scripts. These QA engineers may be better at writing test cases. It is better when an automated testing tool has a way to create automated tests that do not require an in-depth knowledge of scripting languages.

You should also collaborate on your automated testing project with other QA engineers in your department. Testing performed by a team is more effective for finding defects and the right automated testing tool allows you to share your projects with several testers.

Create Good, Quality Test Data

Create Automated Tests That Are Resistant to Changes in the UI

Automated tests created with scripts or keyword tests are dependent on the application under test. The user interface of the application may change between builds, especially in the early stages. These changes may affect the test results, or your automated tests may no longer work with future versions of the application. The problem is automated testing tools use a series of properties to identify and locate an object. Sometimes a testing tool relies on location coordinates to find the object. For instance, if the control caption or its location has changed, the automated test will no longer be able to find the object when it runs and will fail. To run the automated test successfully, you may need to replace old names with new ones in the entire project, before running the test against the new version of the application. However, if you provide unique names for your controls, it makes your automated tests resistant to these UI changes and ensures that your automated tests work without having to make changes to the text itself. This also eliminates the automated testing tool from relying on location coordinates to find the control, which is less stable and breaks easily.
