Smart Developers Don't Code ... The first iteration of code called out to a database every time a user paged through the data. Looking to optimise I decided to cache the original returned data so as not to keep on round tripping back to the database. A sensible thing to do.

Something has stuck in my head from a long time ago, when I was a young junior developer. I was working on a part of an application trying to speed up the access to data in a web app. The first iteration of code called out to a database every time a user paged through the data. Looking to optimise I decided to cache the original returned data so as not to keep on round tripping back to the database. A sensible thing to do.

So head down I spent days coming up with something that would be the best caching Java code anyone had ever seen! I came up with complex algorithms to call, store, page and evict data for this one use case.

After 5 days and nights of coding toil, I proudly met my lead developer and walked him through my code. I bamboozled him with the brilliance of the algorithms.

Confusingly, I was met with, not the congratulatory realisation of seeing revolutionary data paging techniques, but instead with a large sigh and a promise to review.
