Using html2canvas

I was recently tasked with implementing logic that captures react components with their data visualizations on the web page and exports it as an image. Other data visualization libraries (such as Highcharts) allow for graphs to be exported as an image. However, we needed one to export multiple graphs and tables on a page at once.

This is where  html2canvas comes in handy.

This package generates a “screenshot” by reading DOM elements, their styles, and then generating a canvas image from that data. It operates purely on the client side so you don’t have to worry about any requests/server support.

First, install the npm package.

npm i html2canvas

Now that we have it installed, we can import in our component.

import html2canvas from "html2canvas";

Now we can use html2canvas like so.

const capture = () => {
  html2canvas(document.body).then(function(canvas) {
    document.body.appendChild(canvas);
  });
}

In this function, html2canvas takes a DOM element as an argument, generates a canvas image from it and then returns a Promise containing the canvas element. We can access it using a Promise fulfillment handler (.then()) and then do whatever we want with it. In my case, I need to generate an image and download it for the user.

This library was great for my use case, except for one caveat.

If there was any horizontal overflow, it would only capture what was visible. Any part of the DOM element concealed by an overflow scroll was cut off.

This meant that I needed to compensate for any data visualizations that were hidden when the page was resized. I could just stack the visualizations vertically, but this can be complicated.
