Jenkins Metrics and Trends

Running jobs using Jenkins is one of the essential activities during the project development and maintenance, but the questions arise here: this is the only significant activity. What about that situation in which higher management wants to see the builds activity over a while. Here, Jenkins metrics and trends come into the picture. There are some plugins available in Jenkins using which we can easily see about build history over time. We are dedicating this article to understand the details of a few plugins that can help gather the Jenkins metrics and Trends for various jobs and activities. Let’s start the journey with the understanding of the below points:

  • What are the metrics and trends in Jenkins?
  • How to install the metric-related plugin in Jenkins?
  • And, how to view metrics in Jenkins?
  • How to install the trends-related plugin in Jenkins?
  • How to view trends in Jenkins?

What are the metrics and trends in Jenkins?

We stated in the introductory part that metrics and trends are helpful to present the metrics of builds that we carry out over a period of time. We can also view these metrics and trends with the help of graphical formats so that in a single report, we can easily analyze that what is the success and failure ratio of our builds over a while. For example, if we take the “Build History Metrics” plugin, then this plugin shows the following metrics for all of the builds in Jenkins:

  • MTTF (Metrics Time to Failure)
  • MTTR (Mean Time to Recovery)
  • Standard Deviation of Build Time

In the same case, if we install the “build-metrics” plugin in Jenkins, then we can see global build stats in graphical format. So, in the further sections, let’s talk about the installation and usage of these plugins.

Jenkins Is Getting Old — It’s Time to Move On

By far, Jenkins is the most adopted tool for continuous integration, owning nearly 50% of the market share. As so many developers are using it, it has excellent community support, like no other Jenkins alternative. With that, it has more than 1,500 plugins available for continuous integration and delivery purposes.

We love and respect Jenkins. After all, it’s the first tool we encountered at the beginning of our automation careers. But as things are rapidly changing in the automation field, Jenkins is** left behind with his old approach**. Even though many developers and companies are using it, most of them aren’t happy with it. Having used it ourselves on previous projects, we quickly became frustrated by its lack of functionality, numerous maintenance issues, dependencies, and scaling problems.

We decided to investigate if other developers face the same problems and quickly saw the need to create a tool ourselves. We asked some developers at last year’s AWS Summit in Berlin about this. Most of them told us that they chose Jenkins because it’s free in the first place. However, many of them expressed interest in trying to use some other Jenkins alternative.

Top 10 Big Data Trends in 2021 You Can't Afford to Ignore

Big Data is increasingly growing in scope in India, affecting the way industries function as well as boosting economies in its wake. Regardless of the size of an organisation, Big Data helps to make better organisational decisions and thereby brings order to the proceedings, making the world a more habitable place in its turn. Especially the transformations happened in Finance and Insurance Industry is tremendous.

At some point in the past, this was not the reality. Data was not always this “Big”. Only large-scale corporations had access to data then because only they could afford the technology that could process this data. In any case, their requirement was for a data analytics system that could take care of massive amounts of data, so they had hardly any choice in the matter.

Since that time, data has evolved at a terribly fast rate, allowing even smaller organisations to make use of the data they gather – all thanks to the internet and cloud technology. With big data cloud solutions, since they offer remote access to data using just the internet, there no longer remains any need for elaborate setups or data experts (who are not easy to acquire), thus saving these small organisations a fortune in internal spending.

The nuances that come with Big Data can now be handled just as easily by organisations that are intent on leveraging the value that it can bring. Moving beyond a simple IT Trend – as these things come and go, but mostly go, without being sustainable for development – Big Data has forged itself into the veins of the tech world, becoming one of its most prized assets.

And even as we write this, we are aware that Big Data is not one monolithic thing. It grows and changes to meet the demands of the various industries that it is a part of, seeking to solve its problems.
