It should be simple. You have a small object. Maybe something like this, defined here with object literal syntax:

const student = {
 studentId: '445-13-196',

};

Let’s say you want to make an exact duplicate. You already know that you can’t just copy your object to a new variable:

// This is doomed to fail
const studentCopy = student;

After all, custom objects in JavaScript are reference types. (There are no C-like structs.) When you assign one object variable to another, you simply copy the reference. The end result is two variables pointing to the same in-memory object.

So what’s the solution? A basic starting approach is to copy over all the properties of your object. You could do this the hard way, with a for...in loop. Or, use the spread operator, which lets you compress the work down to a single clean line of code:

// Expand all the properties from student
// and set them on studentCopy
const studentCopy = {...student};

If you work with older code, you may have seen this exactly equivalent approach that predates the spread operator and uses the Object.assign() method:

studentCopy = Object.assign({}, student); 

Either way, there’s the solution. At least if you don’t look too closely.
