Why and How to Get Started with AI — Chat with Classmates (Conclusion)

We have introduced AI and its promises, discussed why, in reality, AI does not work, and talked about the AI hacks that do work. I will laydown a couple of roadmaps for you to start learning AI, irrespective of who you are.

These are my answers to questions about AI and its business practice, discussed among ~200 of my fellow classmates from IIT Bombay. They are modified slightly to protect privacy, to remove specific references and for better narration. This is the last part of a series of four posts. In the concluding post of the series I will laydown a couple of roadmaps for you to start learning AI, irrespective of who you are. At this point I hope that you are convinced of the value of learning AI to your own life.

It’s but a Program…

Let’s tie this back to our original premise. For programs of the type ‘If A then do X else do Y’, AI can automatically figure out those conditions or models represented by ‘A’ from the training data. This A can be very sophisticated now, as we have seen. These algorithms are writing seemingly incredible programs themselves.Kids’ games like Minecraft have independently intelligent objects interacting with human players and each other. Just a couple of weeks ago the Department of Defense announced guard dogs a la Black Mirror’s episode Metalhead. In 2017 Saudi Arabia gave citizenship to a robot. AI has beat humans in Jeopardy, radiology and flying fighter jets. It feels like machines are getting too powerful and too independent, too quickly. In my humble opinion this is what is call a hype.
