If you are a back-end developer, you are often faced with having to migrate your database schema with each new release.

The framework called Liquibase can make it easier for you when you need to upgrade your database schema.

In this article, I’ll explain how Liquibase can be used in a Java project, with Spring/Hibernate, to version the database schema.

How does Liquibase work?


Liquibase works with Changelog files (the list of all the changes, in order, that need to execute to update the database).

There are 4 supported formats for these Changelogs: SQL, XML, YAML, and JSON.

Using Database Migration Service to prepare PostgreSQL for migration

If you want to bring the data over from a table that doesn’t have a primary key, you have a few options:

  1. You’ll have to add a primary key prior to starting the migration.
  2. You’ll need to bring the data over yourself after the initial migration. Keeping in mind of course that if you bring the data over yourself, even if you maintain the connection, DMS won’t replicate data for that table moving forward.
  3. You can export the table from the source instance and import it into the new instance.
  4. Finally, you can create a table with the same schema as the one you have that doesn’t have the primary key, give it a primary key (should use a sequence generator to autogenerate the key) and copy the source data into it. Then do the migration.

At first, we didn’t consider an auto-migrating solution because there wasn’t a lot of complexity in the migration, especially for our small databases. We’d just have to bring the application down, export the database, import it to Cloud SQL, and bring it back up. That worked for most of our applications.

But toward the end of the process, two applications remained.

Through conversations with our product team and our Google contact, we learned about the Google Cloud’s Database Migration Service (which was in private preview at the time), which provides a serverless migration experience from MySQL to Cloud SQL for MySQL with continuous data replication, at no additional cost.

System Databases in SQL Server


In SSMS, we many of may noticed System Databases under the Database Folder. But how many of us knows its purpose?. In this article lets discuss about the System Databases in SQL Server.

There are five system databases, these databases are created while installing SQL Server.

  • Master
  • Model
  • MSDB
  • Tempdb
  • Resource
  • This database contains all the System level Information in SQL Server. The Information in form of Meta data.
  • Because of this master database, we are able to access the SQL Server (On premise SQL Server)
  • This database is used as a template for new databases.
  • Whenever a new database is created, initially a copy of model database is what created as new database.
  • This database is where a service called SQL Server Agent stores its data.
  • SQL server Agent is in charge of automation, which includes entities such as jobs, schedules, and alerts.
  • The Tempdb is where SQL Server stores temporary data such as work tables, sort space, row versioning information and etc.
  • User can create their own version of temporary tables and those are stored in Tempdb.
  • But this database is destroyed and recreated every time when we restart the instance of SQL Server.
  • The resource database is a hidden, read only database that holds the definitions of all system objects.
  • When we query system object in a database, they appear to reside in the sys schema of the local database, but in actually their definitions reside in the resource db.
