Best Way to Learn R for Data Science

Best Way to Learn R for Data Science

I will be briefly illuminating the use of R in Data Science, covering details about its importance and how it compares to Python. At the end of the article, I’ll also be sharing a few resources for learning R. Hope you enjoy reading this article!

This series is based on the [Data Science Specialization_](https://www.coursera.org/specializations/jhu-data-science) offered by John Hopkins University on Coursera. The articles in this series are notes based on the course, with additional research and topics for my own learning purposes. For the first course, [Data Scientist Toolbox_](https://www.coursera.org/learn/data-scientists-tools), the notes will be separated into 4 parts. Notes on the series can also be found [here_](http://sux13.github.io/DataScienceSpCourseNotes/)._

Full series

Part 1 - What is Data Science, Big data and the Data Science process
Part 2 - The origin of R, why use R, R vs Python and resources to learn
Part 3 (Coming soon!) - Version Control, Git & GitHub and best practices for sharing code.
Part 4 (Coming soon!)- Types of Data Science questions, Experimental Designs, and more about Big Data!

If you’re new to R programming language or you want to know more about it, then this article is for you, inspired by the DS toolbox course on Coursera, I will be briefly illuminating the use of R in Data Science, covering details about its importance and how it compares to Python. At the end of the article, I’ll also be sharing a few resources for learning R. Hope you enjoy reading this article!

The origin of R Programming Language

The creation of many programming languages are inspired by a specific problem at hand, and in general, to make programming more intuitive. For R, it was to build a more accessible and easier language for statisticians. Back then there was a highly-complex language called SAS which was built for statisticians, but the syntax and features were too difficult to use. Two brilliant developers saw the opportunity and created R, a free, open-source alternative to SAS, which is easier to write and streamlined.
