Let’s take a look at what the two types of DDoS are. Then, learn how to protect websites from DDoS-attacks and the two types of attacks you should know.
A so-called DoS (Denial of Service) attack attempts to make a website inaccessible to users. This works by flooding the network or bringing the server to its knees.
A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is almost the same — but the attack is carried out from multiple systems.
This is what makes a DDoS attack so effective.
Blocking a DoS attack doesn’t have to be difficult — since there is only one source IP, packets coming from it can simply be discarded. Most of the time, this works dynamically. If a particular system sends too many requests, more will be rejected.
Since in DDoS attacks, the requests come from different sources, it is not easy to distinguish between them, especially if the individual systems participating in the attack send only a few requests themselves.
The attackers cannot always be distinguished from real users, making DDoS attacks so problematic.
