Attractive data visualization: (part-1)

Visualize your data with right kind of graphs that can impress anybody. This post will give you an idea about which type of graph is perfect and which is not perfect for your data.

When you think about visualizing the data, The first thing that might come into your mind is graphs or charts. Graphs are like a storytelling tool through which we can get much vital information that is hidden in the data.

We have to select correct chart/graph which is right fit for data. Choosing the wrong chart may provide misleading results. So in this post we will look into the types of charts which are widely used in industry & we also look into for which data they are suitable for.I used Tableau software to demonstrate the concepts used in this article . You can find Tableau workbook here where you can find all the charts/graphs.

This is part 1 of this article in which we will be looking:

  1. Bar Chart
  2. Histogram
  3. Pie Chart
  4. Doughnut Chart
  5. Treemap Chart

1.Bar Chart :

It is composed of a series of bars that tell about the variable’s development.

When to use Bar Chart:

  • Bar charts are great when we want to track the development of one or two variables over time.

Ex. The above Bar graph shows, How the companies profit developed during the given time period (2011 to 2014)

  • We can use a stacked bar chart when we want to show development of one variable over a period , along with some other variable.

Ex. Above is a stacked bar chart that shows the development of sales over a time period and the bars are stacked with the product categories. So stacked bar chart can hold more information than a simple bar chart.

When to avoid using Bar Chart :

  • You should not use bar charts to show the development of more than two variables over a time .Because sometimes it may mislead the interpretation.

here is the example-

From this graph, it is not easy to track the trend of a particular one variable.Hence one should not visualize more than two variable over a time.
