6 Ways to Set a Value for a Variable in SwiftUI 2

6 Ways to Set a Value for a Variable in SwiftUI 2

A simple, written guide to SwiftUI State — Write your first SwiftUI app ... usage and application so you can learn how to use state in SwiftUI. ... Create the following State variable and assign it a value. ... Paired with the knowledge we gained in step 2 above, it should be clear that whatever TextField's value is, ...

If you needed to explain what an app is to an alien, you could do so by simply saying that it is is a collection of control statements that change a body of values held in variables. Of course, there is a little more to it than that. Or is there? At the lowest level of coding (aka assembler), it is just that: a body of control statements managing a block of variables.

As programming languages developed over the decades, we’ve come up with a dictionary of different ways to organise our code with controls, constructs, and metadata. Constructs in coding like packages, classes, structs, functions, methods and metadata for variables like types, scope, and access rights.

Let’s work through some examples using the classic “Hello world” app in Swift. What are our options?

Option 1

Now, the variable here is the string Hello World. Of course, it isn’t a variable yet. But we can make it so and get organised in the process. In SwiftUI, you can set up a binding to a variable and then name it as a parameter when you call the struct containing the link.

Option 1

This works but doesn’t scale well. Try adding a dozen parameters to your code and it’ll quickly become unreadable.

SwiftUI Grids in iOS 14

SwiftUI was announced at WWDC 2019 and it paved a way for declarative programming for building interfaces. SwiftUI Grid comes in two different flavours, which includes LazyVGrid and LazyHGrid. As the name suggest, LazyVGrid is a Grid that flows in vertical direction and the LazyHGrid flows in horizontal direction
