Solving a stupid JavaScript problem

As to the question of how I’d react to it in an interview, I feel like it depends on what the focus of the question is. If the question is actually what the value of tree is, they can bugger off, or expect me to just paste it into my console and then tell them to bugger off.

If however the question is how **would **you solve this, well then that’s quite interesting, and leads into a lot of quirks about JavaScript and the way the compiler works. So in this article I’m going to dive into this mess of things, and explore what interesting ideas come out.

I also streamed the process of solving this problem on Twitch. It’s long, but it gives another view of how to solve such problems piece by piece.

High level thoughts

First, let’s get the thing in a copyable state:

let b = 3, d = b, u = b;

const tree = ++d * d*b * b++ +
 + --d+ + +b-- +
 + +d*b+ +

I notice a few things here right off. I thought there might be some tricks with the compiler going on. see JavaScript will usually add semicolons to the end of each line unless there’s an expression that cannot be terminated. In this case, the + at the end of each line tells the compiler not to terminate this statement.

The first line just creates three variables that are all set to 3. 3 is a primitive value, so any time a copy is made it’s done by value, and so new variables are created with the value of 3. If JavaScript assigned these variables by reference, then each new variable would **point to **the previous variable used, but not create a value all to itself.
