Whenever you encounter a feature online intended to deceive or trick the end user, this is known as a dark pattern. It might be a button you can’t avoid, an intentionally hidden feature, a “limited time” discount with no end date.
Whenever you encounter a feature online intended to deceive or trick the end user, this is known as a dark pattern. It might be a button you can’t avoid, an intentionally hidden feature, a “limited time” discount with no end date. The sky is the limit and unfortunately, these deceptive tactics have been prevalent on the Internet for a long time.
Brad Parscale, the President’s former campaign manager, knows many of them all too well. A master of digital manipulation, he will be the first to admit that he stole the 2016 presidential election from Hillary Clinton with an aggressive digital advertising campaign on Facebook and Instagram. (And naturally denies any assistance from Russia.)
Now his team already has the blueprint for 2020. Why? Because they wrote it. The page “Donald J. Trump” currently spends over $4 million per week on Facebook and Instagram. The campaign has countless ads running with some variation of the same lies we hear every day, alongside a demand to donate or buy something from the online shop. When you visit the main donation page, you won’t find any links other than a button to send money to the campaign. And if you dare try to exit, you will be bombarded with pleading messages and deceptive language.
One landing page from the social campaign explains that the President has agreed to triple match all donations made “within the next hour.” The implication is that he will stop matching after that, but this offer never expires. It’s a dirty trick. They created another one with the same matching donation, but centered around “draining the swamp.” The campaign also has a landing page that calls Joe Biden a racist and pushes a Black Voices For Trump initiative. There’s even a Democrats For Trump page.
In July alone, the website donaldjtrump.com received roughly 25 million unique visitors. It’s estimated that 93% of people who land on another domain from this website end up at winred.com, the main fundraising platform for the Republican Party. The mission of the site, plain and simple, is to siphon your money. Forget his policies. Forget his vision. Forget the truth.
