Next OnAir Cloud AI Week session guide

Welcome to week 8 of Google Cloud Next ‘20: OnAir, where the focus is Cloud AI! This week our goal is to show you how to generate value with AI on our AI Platform. We’ve got a lineup of great content that covers everything from announcements and deep dives to customer stories and demos.

As a developer myself, I’m excited to hear about all the new alpha and beta programs to join and test out new products and APIs in my own projects. Here are some of the talks I’m excited to have on my session list:

• Responsible AI: from Theory to Practice: “With great power comes great responsibility” is great advice that never fades. This session explains Google’s AI Principles, and how we work to make sure those principles are guiding us at every stage: from product development and user research to testing and documentation.
• How AI Has Helped Enterprises Adapt Quickly to Moments of Change: 2020 has been a challenge for everyone, but seeing how our world has adapted and persisted is something that inspires me. That’s why I’m interested to hear more about how businesses have leveraged CloudAI to help them pivot, as well as how that might reshape our “new normal” moving forward.
• Interpreting ML Models with Explainable AI: Want to know the magic behind your models? Explainable AI will shine a light on the features that contributed to your model’s predictions. This one is full of demos touching the AI Platform and AutoML Tables.

Fractal Analytics Acquires AI solution provider Zerogons to strengthen Fractal’s Cloud AI business and accelerate the ‘data to decisions’ journey for its Fortune 500 clients.

Analytics solution provider, Fractal Analytics recently announced the acquisition of enterprise AI solutions platform for data scientists and data engineers, Zerogons. The amount of the acquisition is not disclosed and is stated as it will help strengthen Fractal’s Cloud AI business and accelerate the ‘data to decisions’ journey for its Fortune 500 clients.

Meet Lak, The Brain Behind Google Cloud's Pathbreaking AI Solutions

For this week’s ML practitioners series, Analytics India Magazine(AIM) got in touch with Valliappa Lakshmanan(Lak), Director for Data Analytics and AI Solutions at Google Cloud where he also founded Google’s Advanced Solutions Lab ML Immersion program. He currently leads a team that builds software solutions for business problems using Google Cloud’s data analytics and machine learning products. He is also the author of a handful of popular ML books. In this interview, Lak gives us a glimpse of how data gets leveraged from his vantage point.

AIM: Could you please tell us about your educational background?

Lak: I pursued my PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and my Master’s in Biomedical engineering from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. I did BTech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

AIM: How did your journey in machine learning begin? Your fascination with algorithms. How did it all start?

Lak: My interest in Digital Signal Processing and Image Processing started in college when I got introduced to these subjects. My UG Project was to build a transducer to monitor heart rates. While applying for Masters I was keen to pursue my interest in this area and a lot of my coursework focused around image processing and computer vision. My MS project was on identifying mitral valves from ultrasound images.

My experience of building image processing for ultrasound helped me in getting my first job in weather forecasting. It turns out that much of the signal processing math is similar between ultrasound and ground-based weather radar. The research lab that I worked at – at University of Oklahoma and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was a great opportunity and helped me enhance my skills and knowledge on weather detection algorithms.

As datasets grew over time, I continued my exploration of new technologies and started to apply machine learning methods like genetic algorithms and neural networks to those problems. In the 2010’s when Deep Learning was well on its way to becoming the backbone technology for all sorts of big data problems, it was a natural transition to research areas I was already involved in.

What To Expect From Qualcomm’s Cloud AI 100 Edge AI Development Kit

Qualcomm Ventures recently set up their AI fund to invest up to $100 million in startups which transform artificial intelligence. The fund will focus on startups which want to invest in the area of on-device AI and make the technology more widespread. They are actively looking at investing in areas like autonomous cars, robotics and machine learning. These areas are linked comfortably with Qualcomm technologies which have created impressive processor technologies for mobile phones and other devices all over the world.

“At Qualcomm, we invent breakthrough technologies that transform how the world connects, computes, and communicates,” said Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated. Talking about the future of artificial intelligence and their philosophy, Mollenkopf said, “For over a decade, Qualcomm has been investing in the future of machine learning. As a pioneer of on-device AI, we strongly believe intelligence is moving from the cloud to the edge. Qualcomm’s AI strategy couples leading 5G connectivity with our R&D, fueling AI to transform industries, business models and experiences.”
