Chinese tech giants Alibaba & Baidu have bagged most awards in the 2021 AI City Challenge. The challenge was created four years ago to incentivise research and development in intelligent video analysis for use cases in smart cities and assess tasks where the level of performance is enough to drive real-world adoption.

China's Export Restriction List: Which Technologies Included And Why?

China has revised its exports restrictions list for the first time in 12 years. China’s new restrictions on exports include a bunch of deep technologies, including AI, drone, satellite and cybersecurity. Certain technologies will now be subject to export bans or restrictions, meaning they have to be greenlit by the Chinese government for sale overseas.

The new rules, unveiled by China’s Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology, added many items—including personal information push services based on data analysis and voice-recognition technologies commonly used in smartphones, robots and wearable devices—to the restricted list. Technologies on the list can’t be exported without a license from the government.

China’s Export Prohibited and Restricted Technology Catalog contain various technologies pertaining to artificial intelligence, voice, telecommunications, cybersecurity and cryptography.

Zhao Lijian, Spokesman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The main reason behind releasing the catalogue to regulate technology export management is to facilitate technological development, cooperate with foreign companies and to safeguard national economic security.”

Govt. Announces AI Challenge To Boost Indian Startups Amid COVID-19

The Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MeitY) announced a series of artificial intelligence challenges to boost Indian startups and tech entrepreneurs as a part of Aatmanibhar Bharat initiative amid COVID pandemic.

It said that the importance of digital transformation has accelerated in the last few months due to COVID, and has brought the importance of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence into the picture. AI has especially been used in addressing healthcare crisis, restarting supply chains, enabling online education and more.

To further increase the innovation in these areas, the AI challenge will be organised around the following categories:

• AI Solutions for Education
• AI Solutions for Agriculture
• AI Solutions for Natural Language Processing
• AI Solutions for Smart Mobility and Transportation
• Others

It is inviting applications on MyGov platform, a citizen engagement platform, and will also be prompted on MeitY Startup-Hub in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog.
