The whole brand question has been on my mind for a while now. Whenever people ask me for data science career advice, I almost reflexively tell them to build an online presence. I’ll be honest, I feel the jury is kind of out on the magnitude of impact an online presence has, but I feel it’s definitely worth trying.
The way I think about building a brand is the way I think about cover letters. Will it propel you past the competition? Probably not. But it will give you a slight advantage over some people. These **aren’t **proven numbers, but it’s kind of my reasoning:
Theoretically, if the E[X] of getting any given role you apply to is 2%, having a cover letter could raise your chances to something like 2.2%. Having an online presence could raise that further to 2.5%. Overall it’s not a huge rise in absolute probability, but compared to your original 2%, it’s 25% higher. Again, those aren’t real numbers. The magnitude could very well be way smaller or way bigger. This would be a cool question to study with access to the right data.
The one that should go without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway. Having a LinkedIn is not only crucial for building a brand, it’s just a fantastic thing to have regardless of your profession. You have access to virtually any professional community you can think of, build a network of people that will see your posts, and have a free and already huge venue to post your accomplishments. Setting one up is fast too.
Just remember to change your LinkedIn URL to something easy to spell. Here’s how:
Go to your profile → “Edit public profile & URL” → “Edit your custom URL”

The current pandemic has profoundly changed many things, but the demand for AI and Data Science education has not decreased. What has changed is that move to online education has accelerated.
Many more universities now offer online degrees, including in AI, Data Science, and Machine Learning, so we have limited this directory mostly to universities that have Top Universities CS Rankings. Many thanks to Asel Mendis for collecting most of the data used in this blog.
We published a similar list in 2017 and in 2019.
Here is our 2020 directory of the best online Master Degree programs for AI, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Data Science and Machine Learning.
CS Rank is Top Universities Computer and Information Systems graduate programs rank. They provide individual ranking for the top 50 schools, and then ranges (51-100, 101-150, etc) for the next 450 schools.
Fig. 1 below shows the ranking vs tuition for schools with rank < 500. Where ranking is a range, we took the midpoint of that range.
Fig. 1: Top online MS in Analytics, Business Analytics, Data Science.
Only schools with Top Universities CS Ranking < 500 are shown.
The shape/color correspond to the type of degree: blue circle for Analytics, green square for business, and purple triangle for Data Science. Shape size corresponds to the length of education.
