Let's Encrypt with SSL Certificates

An SSL certificate is a type of digital certificate that provides authentication for a website and enables an encrypted connection. These certificates communicate to the client that the web service host demonstrated ownership of the domain to the certificate authority at the time of certificate issuance.

MongoDB SSL with Self-Signed Certificates in C#

When deploying MongoDB in production, it is strongly recommended that you use an SSL-enabled geo-distributed replica-set configuration for maximum security and availability. ScaleGrid provides you two options for setting up SSL.

One option is purchasing your own CA-signed SSL certificates and configuring them on the MongoDB server. If your application connects to the production database over a public network, do reach out to support@scalegrid.io to learn more about this.

But by default, we configure self-signed certificates for SSL when creating nodes for a new cluster. This avoids extra costs, and can be equally secure when correctly configured. But this does mean that your MongoDB driver needs some help to validate the certificate chain.

The Benefits of SSL Certificates on SEO & Organic Traffic

Google takes over 200 various factors for determining the website rankings in a SERP. One of the key and crucial factors is website security. If you want your website to be displayed higher in SERPs, then you must give due importance to the online security of users who’ll be visiting your site.

Google is considered to be very selective, as it checks whether your website has been safeguarded or not by means of an SSL certificate such that SEO rankings are not compromised. If there are two sites that have a similar looking infrastructure, then the website that is being secured by an SSL certificate will definitely hold the advantage in terms of getting higher ranked in the SERPs.

Before we determine the core benefits of installing SSL certificates for a website’s SEO & traffic, let’s see what SSL certificates are in brief.

What are SSL Certificates?

SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is responsible for providing an additional layer of security by protecting the information of the users and visitors from any online cybercrime. SSL certificates are responsible for providing the encryption to all the user data that is being passed between the servers and users. The encryption of user data makes it difficult for the attackers to read and decode it by keeping everything privately intact.

As of July 2018, Google started notifying the users about the websites that are not secure to use in case of the absence of an SSL certificate. A secured symbol of approval from the search engines about the SSL certificates will definitely be a booster for your website’s SEO ranking.

Different hosting providers have multiple tools and methods for activating your SSL certificate and if you reach out to their support you can normally get their assistance to activate it if the tools to do so are not visible. For example, we will be showing how to activate an SSL certificate on BlueHost’s hosting.

For BlueHost, we will log into their control panel, and under the My Sites section, we will click the button labeled Manage Site for the site we’re wanting to edit. This will bring up the settings for this specific site and we will navigate to the Security tab of the site and toggle the SSL Certificate setting. Activating that on BlueHost will enable SSL which allows you to have your site run on HTTPS.

While activating SSL ensures HTTPS works on your site, there are times where links or other tools may not work properly and to prevent these issues we will be adding the Really Simple SSL plugin found below:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/really-simple-ssl/

Once the plugin has been installed and activated it should add a notification box at the top where you can activate SSL for your site. Once you click the button the Really Simple SSL plugin will go through and update your links to properly work with SSL and all of your content should load using HTTPS.

The setting for the plugin can be found under Settings, SSL, and by default, it should activate Mixed content fixer which will take the links that are currently HTTP and change them to HTTPS and enabling the WordPress 301 redirect will send any links that are using HTTP to the correct HTTPS version of the link.
