Get Your Dream Developer Job by Avoiding These Basic 13 Take-Home Assignment Mistakes

Do you want to know what makes your take-home assignments fail?

I have reviewed many take-home assignments during my career. And let me tell you: software developers make lots of mistakes in their take-home assignments.

I made a lot of mistakes in my take-home assignments when I looked for jobs in the past as well. That’s how I know some of the mistakes because I couldn’t get the job because of them.

When you avoid these mistakes, your assignment will shine.

1. Not getting it reviewed

Here’s an unpopular opinion: get your assignment reviewed before you submit it.

But wait, isn’t this cheating?

When I review a take-home assignment, I want to assess the best work of the candidate. But the best software is not produced by a single rock star engineer. You achieve the best results with teamwork and collaboration.

Imagine you are a pastry chef and applied for the job of a well reputable restaurant. HR manager asked you to prepare a cake with carrots and cream in it. What would you do?

A. Bake the cake and send it to the restaurant without tasting yourself.

B. Bake the cake, taste yourself, then bake a better cake to send to the restaurant.

C. Bake the cake, taste with your chef friends, then bake a better cake to send to the restaurant.

Option A is a mistake. You’d probably either choose the option B or C, which applies to your take-home assignment.

A piece of code is perfect until it gets reviewed. Therefore, take a break after completing the assignment and come back for a review.

Treat the code like someone else wrote it. Does it cover the requirements? How could it be improved? Are there any missing edge cases?

Reviewing your code can save yourself from simple and obvious mistakes, such as leaving unused variables around or huge mistakes such as failing to understand the requirements.

Don’t hesitate to ask a friend to review your solution before submitting your solution. An external pair of eyes can help you discover issues that you’re too blind to see because you’re also acquainted with them. An external review allows you to get feedback about the first impression of your assignment. Is it readable? Maybe you need to include more description in the README?

Sure it sounds like cheating since you should do an assessment alone. But isn’t it a bit of hypocrisy to praise the importance of code review, but then assess candidates’ performance with unreviewed and time-pressured take-home assignments?

I’d even suggest letting the company know that your code was reviewed and acted upon them. You can even mention the things you improved during the code review. Maybe you refactored a React class component to a functional component with your friend’s feedback. Accepting and acting upon reviews is a sign that you strive for code quality, you can handle feedback, and work with others. All of them are essential skills a company is looking for in a sound engineer.

How long does it take to develop/build an app?

With more of us using smartphones, the popularity of mobile applications has exploded. In the digital era, the number of people looking for products and services online is growing rapidly. Smartphone owners look for mobile applications that give them quick access to companies’ products and services. As a result, mobile apps provide customers with a lot of benefits in just one device.

Likewise, companies use mobile apps to increase customer loyalty and improve their services. Mobile Developers are in high demand as companies use apps not only to create brand awareness but also to gather information. For that reason, mobile apps are used as tools to collect valuable data from customers to help companies improve their offer.

There are many types of mobile applications, each with its own advantages. For example, native apps perform better, while web apps don’t need to be customized for the platform or operating system (OS). Likewise, hybrid apps provide users with comfortable user experience. However, you may be wondering how long it takes to develop an app.

To give you an idea of how long the app development process takes, here’s a short guide.

App Idea & Research

_Average time spent: two to five weeks _

This is the initial stage and a crucial step in setting the project in the right direction. In this stage, you brainstorm ideas and select the best one. Apart from that, you’ll need to do some research to see if your idea is viable. Remember that coming up with an idea is easy; the hard part is to make it a reality.

All your ideas may seem viable, but you still have to run some tests to keep it as real as possible. For that reason, when Web Developers are building a web app, they analyze the available ideas to see which one is the best match for the targeted audience.

Targeting the right audience is crucial when you are developing an app. It saves time when shaping the app in the right direction as you have a clear set of objectives. Likewise, analyzing how the app affects the market is essential. During the research process, App Developers must gather information about potential competitors and threats. This helps the app owners develop strategies to tackle difficulties that come up after the launch.

The research process can take several weeks, but it determines how successful your app can be. For that reason, you must take your time to know all the weaknesses and strengths of the competitors, possible app strategies, and targeted audience.

The outcomes of this stage are app prototypes and the minimum feasible product.
