How to Build the Classic Snake Game using Pure JavaScript

In this video I show you how to build the classic snake game using pure JavaScript. That means we will use no libraries or frameworks at all. We won’t even need to use canvas in this tutorial since CSS grid makes working with snake incredibly easy.

🧠 Concepts Covered:

  • How to create a game loop
  • How to position elements in a CSS grid
  • Best practices for game development
  • Best practices for breaking up large files

How to Build the Classic Snake Game using Pure JavaScript

JavaScript Snake Game Tutorial - Develop a Simple Snake Game

Work on real-time JavaScript Snake game project and become a pro

Snake game is an interesting JavaScript project for beginners. Snake game is a single-player game, which we’ve been playing for a very long time. The game mainly consists of two components – snake and fruit. And we just need to take our snake to the food so that it can eat and grow faster and as the number of fruits eaten increases, the length of snake increases which makes the game more interesting. While moving if the snake eats its own body, then the snake dies and the game ends. Now let’s see how we can create this.

JavaScript Project Prerequisites

To implement the snake game in JavaScript you should have basic knowledge of:

1. Basic concepts of JavaScript

2. HTML

3. CSS

Before proceeding ahead please download source code of Snake Game: Snake Game in JavaScript

Steps to Build the Project – JavaScript Snake game

1. Create Html file

HTML builds the basic structure. This file contains some basic HTML tags like div, h1, title, etc. also we’ve used bootstrap (CDN is already included).

index.html:

Code:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
    <title>DataFlair Snake game</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.5.0/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-9aIt2nRpC12Uk9gS9baDl411NQApFmC26EwAOH8WgZl5MYYxFfc+NcPb1dKGj7Sk" crossorigin="anonymous">
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="static/style.css">
</head>
<body>
    <div class="container">
        <div class ="Jumbotron">
        <h1>DataFlair Snake game using vanilla JavaScript</h1>

            <h2 class="btn btn-info">
                Score:   0
            </h2>

            <div class="containerCanvas">
                <canvas id="canvas" width="500" height="500" class="canvasmain"> </canvas>
            </div>
        </div>
    </div>
    <script src="static/fruit.js"></script>
    <script src="static/snake.js"></script>
    <script src="static/draw.js"></script>
</body>
</html>

We have used simple HTML tags except tag. This new tag was introduced in HTML5, which is used to draw graphics, via JavaScript. It is nothing without JavaScript so we will use it in our JavaScript file to actually draw the board and the objects required. We’ll see its implementation in JS files.

How to Build A Snake Game in JavaScript | Code The Snake Game using JavaScript and HTML5

In this tutorial, we’re going to create the snake game we used to play on NOKIA mobile phones.

Snake is the common name for a video game concept where the player maneuvers a line which grows in length, with the line itself being a primary obstacle. The concept originated in the 1976 arcade game Blockade, and the ease of implementing Snake has led to hundreds of versions (some of which have the word snake or worm in the title) for many platforms. After a variant was preloaded on Nokia mobile phones in 1998, there was a resurgence of interest in the snake concept as it found a larger audience. There are over 300 Snake-like games for iOS alone.

The player controls a dot, square, or object on a bordered plane. As it moves forward, it leaves a trail behind, resembling a moving snake. In some games, the end of the trail is in a fixed position, so the snake continually gets longer as it moves. In another common scheme, the snake has a specific length, so there is a moving tail a fixed number of units away from the head. The player loses when the snake runs into the screen border, a trail or other obstacle, or itself.

And today you’re going to create the Snake game using JavaScript and HTML(or HTML5).

We won’t use any framework to build the game, just Vanilla JavaScript.
